Evan sat on the couch and stared at his phone screen.

What was he supposed to do? Just say no? He couldn't say yes, though.

Rereading the last message, Evan sighed. He knew he had hurt his mother's feelings. He didn't mean to, but he honestly didn't want to go.

What his mom was thinking when she said yes to marrying his stepdad, Evan had no clue. He'd never say it aloud, but she must've been under the influence.

"Hey, do you want— What's wrong?"

Jonathan strolled his way over to the couch and decided to pop a squat. He'd never seen Evan look so upset before.

"My mom wants me to come home for Thanksgiving."

Jonathan cocked his head. "That's great... Isn't it?

"I guess. I dunno. I don't want to go alone."

"Why not?"

"It's a long story..."

"I'll go with you, if you want."

Evan's eyes lit up more than they should have. "Really?"

"Yeah, sure, why not?"

Jonathan was suddenly engulfed in a hug as Evan whispered 'thank you's over and over again. Hesitant about it at first, Jonathan finally hugged back and replied, "No problem."

The two stayed hugging for a while; neither one minded too much.

Jonathan thought the reason why Evan didn't want to go alone was because his mother was maybe expecting him to have a partner by now. He wasn't sure of anything, of course, considering he knew nothing of Evan's sexuality, but that's what he was assuming.

Evan knew the reason why he didn't want to go alone was because of his own personal safety. His stepfather was a stereotypical one: abusive and alcoholic. Not so much the alcohol, but when he did drink, the violence was much worse. At least with Jonathan there he'd hopefully be okay.

But Jonathan couldn't find out about the real reason.
