The next couple of days went great. I went round all the schools and managed to get a couple of interviews for teaching positions. It was now Friday and I had the full selection process for one today. It was at a primary school about a 5 minute walk from my Grandparents’ house. Deciding to leave early, I left the house and walked down to the park first. I loved going to the park, it was so peaceful around here. I used to come here a lot with Casey when we were younger, we’d sit here together and watch the ducks on the lake and then we’d throw them leftover bread.

Walking down the street after an hour sat at the park, I was getting slightly nervous. I’d only had one interview like before, from my last job. I’d only been there a couple of months and I didn’t think I’d need another one so soon. I entered the school and told the receptionist I was there. Sitting down, I took a look around the area I could see. In front of me was a door leading to a hallway, and I noticed the sign above it that said “Head teacher” and “Dep. Head teacher”. As I was looking around I heard someone say my name.

“Mr Price?” It was the receptionist. I looked up at her. “They’re ready for you now.” She smiled and led me towards a big room next to the head teacher’s office. There were 4 people sat behind a long desk. They introduced themselves as the Head teacher, Chair of Governors, a Parent Governor and the Safeguarding Officer.

“Dylan Price” I introduced myself before sitting down on the opposite side of the desk.

“So, I’d like to get straight to the nitty gritty stuff, if you don’t mind” the head teacher smiled.

I chuckled and replied. “Yeah, that’s great with me. No point in messing around. May as well get straight to what we’re here for.”

“so…” He began, looking at the sheet of paper in front of him. “Why did you decide to become a teacher?”

I thought about it for a moment before answering. “When I was in secondary school, there were several students that needed a little extra help with their work, so I helped them. It was something I always loved to do and when they all got better grades at the end of the year, I was so pleased with them as well as myself that id managed to help someone in that way. It was satisfying”. I loved teaching people in school. I even taught Nathan at one point.

“I notice that you recently moved back here after 8 years away. Why did you decide to apply for this job here?”

“Well, I moved away with my family when I was sixteen but it never felt like home and I’ve only recently got the chance to come back here. I came for the job here because I came to this school when I was young and I loved it here. It’s a great school, and I feel like I could bring a lot to the school.” I said.

I looked around the table and saw that a couple of the interviewers were writing down what I’d said on the paper in front of them. I suddenly felt nervous. Being judged wasn’t one of my strong points. I hated it.

“What is it that you feel you can bring to the school?”…

There were more questions similar to that, and others about safeguarding and children’s’ progress and behaviour management.

As a whole, the interview went great. I got to know a little more about the school and I told them a little about myself. They seemed pleased, but there was one more thing I had to do before the interview process was over. I had to teach a 30 minute class and show them some teaching styles I could bring to the school. I entered the room and It was bright and cheerful; it doesn’t need wallpaper as most of the walls were covered in children’s work and exciting displays.  There was a comfy, well-stocked book corner with lots of squishy cushions and bean bags for everyone to sit on to enjoy a good book.  It seemed like such a happy place that everyone enjoys being in, one where children know that if they have a problem there will always be someone who can help sort it out.
