2 weeks later we were on our way to the Bahamas. Casey was so excited; she hadn’t been on holiday in years and was practically bouncing in her seat.

“Calm down” I laughed at her.

     “I’m so exciteeeed” she squealed.

“Me too” I smiled. “I’m excited to be seeing you in a bikini.” I raised my eyebrows suggestively.

     She punched me.

     “Ow, Case, not nice”

     “Tough. You’re such a perve.”

“Damn, right, when I’ve got a girlfriend like you.”

     Shit.

     Her face fell.

“I-I-Is that what I am?” she stuttered.

I looked in her eyes, but I couldn’t figure out what she wanted. My heart was jumping out of my chest and I hadn’t a clue what to say. It just came out and I know it’s what I want, but is it what Casey wants.

     Aw, hell

“Casey” I said, grabbing her hand. It was clammy. “Are you okay?”

     She nodded.

     I took a deep breath.

“I’ve always loved you. Even when I was with Annie. Annie always said that she knew she was second best to you.”

     Her mouth hung open.

“I only left that day because my parents were forcing me to go with them. I didn’t want to break up with you, but a long distance relationship would have been tough on us. I didn’t want that. I wanted you to move on without me”

     She just stared at me.

“If you’d like to, I’d like you to be my girlfriend.”

     “Tell me about Annie”

     I froze.

     “Annie?”

“Yes, Annie. You never speak about her. She was your wife Dylan. There must be something you want to talk about. ”

I didn’t like to talk about it.

     “I don’t-“

“Dylan” she warned. “The answer will be no if you don’t speak about her.”

     I sighed.

“She was beautiful. Sh-she had Cancer just like Lola.” I pulled out a photo from my jeans pocket and passed it to Casey.

     “She’s beautiful”

“I never got to go to her funeral. Her parents planned it all when I was in a coma.”

I didn’t want to cry on a plane full of other passengers, but I couldn’t help it. I could feel my eyes stinging and before I knew it I was full on crying.

“I miss her.” I sobbed into Casey’s arms. “She was the sweetest girl I’d met in a long time and she understood everything. She told me to come back to you when she died. She wanted me to be happy.”
