“I’m pregnant” I blurted out to Benny whilst lying next to him on the lawn after he dragged me out of the house.

Benny laughed, unbeliebing of the words that had just spilled out of my mouth “Of course you are, Case” he snorted. He looked at me, with a smirk on his face for a moment before he realised I wasn’t joking. His eyes widened and he jumped up, looking slightly disgusted. “WHAT?!” he shouted “What the fuck, Casey? You slept with him? You’re 16!”

“Yeah, 16 is old enough to have sex, you know” I said sarcastically.

“I do know!” he scolded. “Casey, you’re not old enough to have a baby!” He paused for a second. “Wait a minute. Dylan slept with you and then he left. Does he know?”

I shook my head. “I was going to tell him, but then his parents told us that they were leaving and Dylan had no choice but to go with them. I didn’t want to trap him with a baby, for God’s sake.”

“How long have you known?” He looked at me with anger in his eyes.

I paused. I didn’t want to tell him. I’d known for long enough and as far as 9 months of pregnancy goes, there wasn’t long of it left.

     "Casey, tell me!" he barked.

I looked away, too scared to open my mouth

"If you don't tell me, I can't help you, Casey. I want to help you as much as possible. Tell me how long you've known you're pregnant!"

      “4 months” I whispered.

“Oh my god” he ran his hands through his hair and laid back down next to me. “You’re half way through a pregnancy and you never told anyone? Why didn’t you tell me, Casey?”

Oh, yeah. Did he really think I was going to tell him? I could speak to him about a lot of things, but this wouldn’t have been one of them.

“I couldn’t, Benny. What would you have done? Dylan only left 2 weeks ago. Tell me exactly what you’d have done if I’d have told you that I was pregnant before now.”

He thought about it for a moment. “Ok, I get your point”

“What would you have done? Tell me.” I ordered. I knew exactly what he would have done.

“I’d have punched his fucking lights out for touching my sister like that” His fists clenched and his fingers dug into his palms.

“Exactly” I sighed. That’s the one thing I didn’t want. I didn’t want Benny scaring Dylan away. But, then, I lost him anyway, so that was a pointless thought. “And I’d have made him stick around to look after this baby instead of leaving it all to you.”

“Exactly. And I didn’t want that. If he was going to stay, I’d have wanted him to stay because he wanted to. Not because you beat him into making a decision that he didn’t want”

“What are you going to do, Casey?” Benny asked after we’d laid there in silence for a few minutes. I turned my head to face his. He was looking at me through glazed eyes. He looked sad. “You’ll have to drop out of college and you’ll need to spend all your time looking after this baby. It won’t be easy. And it’s going to be especially hard, because the baby’s father isn’t around. And when your friends are out on a night time at parties or doing whatever you lot do, you’ll be sat up with a sicky baby screaming in your ears while your body yearns for sleep”
