The sunlight was pouring through the windows when I awoke the next morning, but I was cold. I pulled the quilt over my head to block out the light and lay there for a bit longer. After another 15 minutes, I got out of bed and headed for a shower. Turning the shower on and stepping in, my thoughts turned to Annie. She’d known all about Casey and how things had ended between us and was intent on putting things right.
“Go find her.” She’d said one night whilst we were sat in silence watching the TV.
“Find who?” I’d asked, not quite sure who she was talking about.
“Casey” she replied. “Go find her and sort things out or you’ll never find peace with it all.” She looked at me with sad eyes. She couldn’t understand why I hadn’t got over Casey yet. I should have, but I hadn’t.
I stepped out the shower, wrapped a towel around myself and went back in my room to get dressed in a pair of baggy jeans and a white t-shirt. When I got dressed, I made my way downstairs to find Nana cooking bacon and sausages.
“Mm, that smells nice.” I said as I reached the kitchen.
“Good morning, dear. Do you want some?” she asked, turning round to look at me.
I smiled “yes please, Nana.” I always liked her fried breakfasts. “Where’s Granddad?” I asked, looking around and noticing that he wasn’t here.
“He’s in the shed, love. He spends his mornings in there now.” She sighed. “I don’t mind, really.” She added, “Him being out there means I get peace to read and do my knitting. Go and get him, would you, dear. Tell him his breakfast’s ready” I chuckled and made my way outside to find him. Sure enough, I found him in the shed, where Nana said he would be.
“Good Morning, Granddad” I said, poking my head around the shed door. He jumped slightly and looked up.
“Good, God, boy. You scared me.” He chuckled. “Did you sleep well?” he added.
“I slept great, thanks.” That wasn’t quite true. I’d spent most of the night awake, thinking. Granddad looked at me with a quizzical look on his face. “Nana said breakfast’s ready.” I added before he could say anything else. He put his tools down and I started to walk away back into the house but he grabbed me and pulled me back.
“You know you can talk to me, son, don’t you?” He asked. I nodded. “I know you’ve been through a lot, but there’s nothing you can’t tell me and your Nana. We’re here to listen” I nodded again.
“Thanks, Granddad, I know all this, I just don’t need to talk right now.” I mumbled.
“Ok” he looked defeated and upset.
“Sorry” I added, hugging him.
“It’s not your fault, son, don’t worry about it” he smiled, and we walked into the house together.
“So, what are you going to do today, then?” Granddad asked as we were tucking into our breakfasts.
“I don’t know” I admitted. “I thought I might start looking for a job. I don’t want to be stuck inside all day; I want something to get me out of the house. The school term has just started, so I think I’ll go round the schools to see if there’s anything about.” Coming back here had made me see things more clearly. Before I left the hospital yesterday, all I wanted to do was stay inside all the time. I was used to that. It was comfortable. But now, I wanted to get out there. “Is there a gym around here now?” I asked, curiously. “I noticed that the old one isn’t there anymore”
