“So, what do you want to eat then, Princess?”
We were walking down the beach front, looking for a restaurant to eat in. Casey was wearing a white dress which came down past her knees and some white sandals. She looked breath-taking, with her hair up in a twist and make up on – not that she needed it.
I looked over to her and smiled. She was staring out to the sea, looking blank, but the expression on her face told me she was deep in happy thoughts. I watched her smile a few times before she noticed me watching her and turned to look at me. I couldn’t help but laugh.
“What?” she asked, confused over my laughter.
“You were so deep in thought; I was watching you for ages.”
She blushed.
“Aw, Princess, don’t worry, it was sweet.” I smiled. “What were you thinking about? They sure looked like nice thoughts. You were smiling”
“It’s so beautiful, isn’t it” she commented, stopping to look towards the sea again. I don’t think she was particularly asking me, even though there was a hint of question in her voice.
“It sure is.” I replied, following her gaze. The sun drowned in the horizon, lighting up the sky as if lit by fire. I could smell the scent of the water, the crispness of it in the air. It was mesmerizing. The sight of it made me feel warm and tingly inside.
I sighed contentedly.
“I’m hungry, Dylan, why have we stopped?” Casey asked and I stared at her in disbelief.
“You’re the one who stopped, Missus, don’t blame me” I replied, playfully.
“I can’t help it, why did you let me come here, it’s just so beautiful. I can’t help myself stopping to look at the view. It’s breath-taking, Dyl, it really is. I’m glad we got to come here in the end, even if it is nearly 9 years since we planned it”
“I’m glad we’ve got to do it, too. I never want to do anything with anyone else, ever again” I smiled and moved towards her and kissed her on the lips, cupping her face, tenderly. My eyes automatically closed as I savoured her taste, pulling her close, savouring every detail of it. We pulled apart and I wrapped my arms around her as we continued to walk down the beach towards the restaurant.
I never wanted to forget this moment. Or any moment I spent with Casey. I wanted to spend the rest of my life with Casey, if she’d just let me. I had a feeling she was hiding more from me than she’d told me before. I still felt like she couldn’t trust me, and it was all my fault. My heart shrank every time I thought like this. If I hadn’t have left her, back then, she wouldn’t be like this, but right in that moment, I didn’t want to know what was wrong. I had to push these feelings to the back of my mind. I just wanted to spend this holiday being happy, thinking about nothing but right here, right now and ourselves until we had to go home. I wasn’t going to ruin it here, by asking her what she was holding back.

We had a lovely dinner, and when we left, we paid and left the restaurant smiling. Walking back down the beach front, Casey’s eyes wandered back to the horizon, so I pulled her down to sit on the sand, with her sat in-between my legs, running my fingers down her arms and resting my chin on her shoulder. I heard a contented sigh as she relaxed in my arms and we watched the stars twinkling and glistening over the ocean.
