Your feet pounded on the wet pavement, synchronized with those of your boyfriend, Peter's. His jacket wrapped carefully around your shoulders, held warm against your skin by the arm he had lain there. His thumb traced small circles on the woollen hem. You pulled the jacket tighter around your waist and nestled closer to Peter's side in search of warmth.
Rain began to beat down heavily on the empty streets and you both quickly ducked under the cover of a nearby store's pergola.
"Well, that came out of no where." Peter laughed, shaking his head like a wet dog would.
"Ahh, stop that," you squealed, one hand covered your face from the water, the other reached out to slap Peter's arm playfully. "And what do you mean it came out of no where? It's been raining almost all day, Pete."
Peter pouted and looked out that the rain filled street. "Did you bring an umbrella?"
"No," you replied. "Did you?"
"No."
"Damn it," you muttered, mostly to yourself.
It grew silent for a few seconds as you both thought of ways to get home relatively dry. You stared out at the deserted streets. You lifted your hand. The cold droplets of rain sent a tingling shiver through your body. You smiled. You always did love the feeling of water against your skin.
Peter glanced down at you. He smiled, knowing how the rain always seemed to calm you. He remained silent for a moment, perfectly content to just be there with you. He watched how your fingers flowed gracefully through the rain. An idea popped into his head.
"Dance with me," he said suddently. You dropped your hand and adverted your gaze to him.
"What? Pete, no. It's literally pouring right now," you remarked, pointing up at the sky for emphasis.
"Come on, (Y/N). Dance with me." He stepped out into the rain. His hair immediately flopped down on his face.
"If I get sick, I swear to god, Parker."
"You won't. I promise. Just-just dance with me. Please?" His outstretched hand turned towards you.
You nodded, resting your small hand in his larger one. He smiled, pulling you in close to him. His hands encircled your waist, your hands creeping up around his neck. You rested your head on his chest, hearing his heart beat heavily.
You smiled. Your fingers played with the hair at the nape of his neck while you both swayed to the rhythm of your synchronized breaths. The cold water droplets streamed down your face, in perfect contrast to the warmth of your body. You tilted your head back, gazing up at the night sky. The faint twinkles of stars illuminated your imagination as you mentally drew lines connecting the constellations. You sighed in blissful content.
Peter's hand slid up from your midsection to gently caress your cheek. You directed your attention to him. Looking directly into his brown eyes and finding nothing but love and admiration. He smiled down at you. The type of smile that always made your knees weak and butterflies swarm in your stomach.
He leaned down, pressing a short tender kiss to your lips. He lingered there, the taste of his lips brushing over yours ever so slightly. "I love you," he mumbled. You could feel him grin.
You opened your eyes, as did he. Noses still touching but foreheads now resting together. "I love you too, Pete," you whispered in return, because you did. You loved him so much. He pulled you in closer, your bodies resting against each other as he began to sway back and forth again.
You both stayed like that for a while, just enjoying each others company. No words were needed and there were no awkward silences. The rain was still pouring down and water was pooling in your shoes, making your socks wet. But for the first time, in a long time, you were finally happy. In that moment you finally felt alive.
