from a young age, momo was sana's protector. the other kids their age were not interested in being her friend, so they decided to pick on her instead. momo, however had taken a liking to the girl who had decided to sit by her on their first day of 1st grade.
momo had spent most recesses by herself. people always asked her to play, but she preferred to be alone. she had a wild imagination that she liked to put to use. one day, she saw sana on the ground crying, her knees pulled up to her chest. momo bounded over to her instinctively and dropped to her knees. sana raised her head, her eyes red and puffy from crying. "what happened?" momo asked.
sana sniffled and let the tears continue to flow down her face. she didn't say anything, just simply pointed at a group of boys who were snickering on the other side of the playground.
momo furrowed her brows and marched over to them. "hey!" she yelled, interrupting the conversation the young boys were having.
they all turned to look at her. "what you did to sana wasn't nice! it was mean! what did she do to you guys?" as momo did her best to scold the boys, she heard footsteps behind her. she turned her head and saw sana behind her, no longer crying. she got behind momo, not wanting to be seen by the boys that had just pushed her down.
"what are you gonna do about it?" one of the boys sneered. momo gave him a deadly look. without thinking, she kicked his shins as hard as she could. the boy cried out in pain and fell down, and the other boys backed away.
"weirdo!" one of the boys yelled.
unfortunately, a teacher saw momo kick him and she got punished, as expected. her parents were called to the school and they punished her further. momo felt bad for kicking the boy as she was being dragged inside by a teacher. she looked back and saw sana, still standing behind the boys. this time she was smiling. the boys were paying no attention to her. in momo's eyes, it was all worth it. if it made sana happy, it was okay. that is something that stayed with her.
they were friends all throughout primary school, into middle school. sana would come over to momo's house and spend the night every weekend. momo's parents considered sana their second daughter. momo had tried to go to sana's house to hangout a few times, but sana always got awkward about it, so momo stopped trying after awhile.
by middle school, they were practically inseparable. they were always together, and everyone knew who they were. everyone also knew that if you were friends with sana, you were also friends with momo. you couldn't just be friends with one of them.
surprisingly enough, the first day of freshman year was the peak of their relationship. something happened that neither of them ever forgot. the school day was completely normal. sana showed up at momo's house and they walked to school, went to their classes, sat by their friends at lunch, and then went home. sana came home after school and stayed until it got dark.
momo watched sana walk down the road. she always did. she watched until she couldn't see her, especially at night. once momo couldn't see her, she turned around and went inside. she went upstairs and showered, and then went back to her room where she relaxed until she heard a noise at her window.
she got up, peeking curiously around. no one was stalking her, so she looked out and saw sana in her backyard, visibly upset. she was crying. momo didn't hesitate to sprint downstairs and out to her. it had only been about 45 minutes since she left.
momo ran to sana and embraced her. "what happened?" she asked. sana didn't say anything. momo pulled away from their hug and looked at her. her right cheek was bright red and a bruise was forming under her eye. momo didn't ask again, she just simply grabbed sana's shoulders and walked her inside.
"momo, what are you-" her mother began, walking to meet momo at the door. she stopped when she saw a crying sana. "sana, sweetie, what happened?"
momo didn't answer. she grabbed an ice pack from the fridge and wrapped in it a towel, and gave it to sana. her parents weren't particularly nice. momo had only met them a few times and had already formed a hatred for them. not only were they rude to momo and her parents, but they were openly rude to their own daughter. momo had seen her mother grab sana by her hair if she spent too long saying goodbye to momo. sana had told her about the time when her mother threw her out of the house for spilling her juice on the carpet. momo remembered when that happened. she ran to momo's crying, knocking on the door in the middle of the night.
momo didn't have to ask her mom if sana could stay. momo helped sana keep the ice pack on her face, said a quick goodnight to her mother, and went up to her room. she always let sana have her bed even though sana said she didn't mind laying on the uncomfortable, spare bed momo always lugged in. sana didn't complain this time.
momo had never seen sana this upset. she had never seen her this wounded. she felt something different this time, like a need to protect her even outside of school too.
"we need to tell someone about this." momo said softly, sitting next to a sniffling sana. momo moved the hair out of sana's face, tucking the strands behind her ear.
"no.." sana started. "no we don't. it was my fault." she said, readjusting the ice pack.
momo scoffed. "i don't care. they had no reason to hit you." she said. momo got up and pulled out a pair of pajamas for sana to wear. sana took the clothes from her, setting the ice pack down.
"let me see it." momo said. sana turned her face towards momo. her face did look a bit better, but there would definitely be a bruise. momo rested her hand against sana's face, and sana flinched slightly.
"sorry." momo choked out, dropping her hand. sana caught it, placing it back on her face. "it's okay." she whispered.
they always had moments like this. especially when sana was upset. momo found it as a way to cheer her up. they stood there for a moment, momo's warm hand placed against her cold face. momo licked her lips, suddenly realizing they were dry.
sana grinned for a second, and then left the room to change. momo shook her head and sat back down on the bed. she squeezed her eyes shut and swallowed hard. why did she want to kiss her?
sana entered the room a few minutes later, and momo suddenly forgot about her confusion. "do i look badass?" sana asked, pointing to the red marks on her face.
momo laughed. "yes. you look so badass."
"you should see the other guy." she chirped. they both laughed together, before sana joined her on the bed and they laid there together and cuddled until they got tired.
momo started to get up, but sana pulled her back. "momoring.." she whined. momo chuckled, going back to her position next to sana. they had fallen asleep like this before, and her mother never cared, but it still made her nervous.
momo looked down at sana, who's head was on her chest. her heart started beating again, and she prayed that sana didn't notice. she kissed the top of sana's head, making sana snuggle into her. momo smiled, closing her eyes.
they shot right back open when she heard her bedroom door open. "just making sure you were okay, sana." her mother said. sana smiled and nodded.
"sleep well girls. i love you both." she said, smiling. momo smiled and told her goodnight again. the door closed and momo realized she was holding her breath. she exhaled, letting out a shaky breath.
sana looked up with a smile on her face. "goodnight momoring." she said.
"goodnight sana."
