As I slowly walk into the room, Grayson's eyes shift from the television to me and the kids. I bite my lip to keep from bawling, and I restrain myself from running over and giving him hugs and kisses.
"Daddy?" Mike asks.
Grayson raises one eyebrow. "Ma'am, your child is very sexual... even with strangers."
"Yeah, um... sorry about that." I bend down to Mike and Lilly. "You two, could you play for a little bit while me and daddy talk?"
Mike nods then grins and turns to Lilly. They play with their hands, some invented game that looks like a twisted version of rock, paper, scissors.
I walk to the side of Grayson's bed and keep my hands behind my back so I don't run my hand through his perfect hair.
"Are you a nurse?" He asks.
I shake my head.
"Um... my aunt?"
I laugh quietly and shake my head.
"Who are you, then?"
"Listen, you got shot a few weeks ago, went into a coma, lost too much blood, and now you've lost your memory."
Grayson's eyes widen and a look of shock and confusion crosses his face.
"What year do you think it is?"
"I don't know... the last year I remember is 2000."
"Right before we met..." I whisper to myself, tears threatening to fall.
"I'm sorry, don't cry... was that a bad year for you?"
"No, no, it's just that... we met in 2001."
"Where did we meet?"
"Kindergarten."
"Whoa... how long did our friendship last?"
"That's a long story." I smile.
He pats the spot next to him and scoots over. "I have all day."
"Well," I sit next to him, careful to not mess anything up. "It was a hot day on August 26th. Providence Elementary School was a new building. I don't know what happened that day, because I wasn't there. I came in the middle of the year, about January. I had just moved from New Bern, North Carolina. Beautiful place."
"When I walked into the small classroom, everyone immediately looked up from their simple math equations and turned their attention to me. I was flushed with embarrassment, I've always been a shy one. The teacher told me to sit next to Grayson, the boy with the bowl cut. I giggled a little, thinking she was joking about the bowl cut. Then I saw you, waving at me from the back of the classroom, your stupid bowl cut and all."
"We became extremely close friends that year. Our parents thankfully became good friends, so we could see each other way more often. Now, skip to hmm... 7th grade. You've still that dumbass hair cut, and I've just gotten dumbass braces. Blue, if you were wondering. Keep in mind that middle and HighSchool girls are so mean."
"I got pushed around a lot for getting good grades and having braces. You always told them to back off, but you didn't scare anyone. Yet."
"Skip to 9th grade. Bowl cut is finally off. You've grown 3 inches over the summer. Me, well, I didn't grow at all. I still had those stupid braces. Still blue, by the way. Being so tall, you did start to scare people. And your bad temper got you in terrible trouble."
"Whenever someone called me a name, you shoved them into the wall. But whenever someone pushed me or tripped me, where you got your signature move, you grabbed them by the collar of their shirt and pinned them to the wall, yelling at them to never touch me again. Then, the principal came running down the hallways of Providence High, asking what the hell you were doing. He knew, you had done it plenty of times before. But he couldn't expel you because you were the only kid that was keeping the basketball team from losing."
"Now to senior year. You're 6'3". I'm still way shorter with no more braces. You're the pro basketball boy, and I'm the girl who is best friends with the pro basketball boy. At prom, I had to leave the next day for a whole summer in Paris, so we stuck together the whole time. It was the best night of my life. We danced and laughed the whole time, but the best part was when I was hugging you goodbye, you kissed me. My first kiss ever. I was so excited that I couldn't stop smiling the whole week. We didn't text much the whole summer, but finally, finally, when we got to Duke University, we ran to each other and got to hug again."
"Hours later, I officially become your girlfriend. Years later, after the 2018 NCAA Championship that you guys won on your senior year, you got in front of a camera and proposed to me. I was so tongue twisted that I almost said no, but thankfully I came to my sense and said yes. Months later, we're married, and I'm pregnant. With Mike, that silly guy." I point to Mike.
"Awhile later, I surprise you with the fact that I'm pregnant again. Which gives us previous little Lilly." I point to Lilly.
"So, that's our life story." I realize I've tears trailing down my face. Grayson gives a small smile and wipes my tears.
"Even though I don't remember you, you're super duper important to me."
"Thank you." I smile and lightly hold his hand.
The doctor walks in. "Well, we did some research on the testing we did, and Grayson should regain his memory in about a week."
"Really?"I burst into a hugeeee smile. I thought he was gone forever!
"Yep. You'll be able to take him home in two days, you'll just have to watch him carefully."
I nod and my smile continues to grow.
One week later
"Jackie! Oh my God! Why does my back hurt? Help me!!"
I run into our bedroom and tackle Grayson in a huge hug, crying tears of joy. "Don't you dare ever leave me again!"
He pulls away and kisses my tears. "What do you mean, baby?"
"You got shot! You fell into a coma for two fucking weeks! You lost your memory! I missed you so damn much, you dingle!" I wrap my arms tightly around his torso.
Grayson chuckles and pats the top of my head. "Huh. That's weird."
"Weird?! No, it was awful! I couldn't kiss you for...ever!!! I think I should lose my memory to even this out!"
"Darling, darling. Calm down. I'm here now, okay? And I won't leave you again."
"If you know what's best for you, you won't."
Grayson rolls his eyes while smirking and kisses me. I immediately kiss back, having wanted this feeling for a long time.
We both pull away when Mike jumps onto the bed and hugs Grayson. "Daddy! Daddy! Daddy! Took you long enough! How dare you leave us!"
Grayson lets out his dorky laugh and kisses Mikes forehead. "You are your mother."
Mike giggles and backs away, letting Lilly crawl over the covers to him. The smile on Grayson's face turns even larger when Lilly says 'Mama'.
"Ha!" I yell.
"No fair!" Grayson laughs.
"That's what you get for leaving us."
"So now we're even?"
"Hmmm... yes. Yes we are."
Ah Shit guys, I'm in tears.
It's hard to write this at 1:30 AM while your cat licks herself next to you...
