Luke was having his first chemotherapy session, he sat on a bed as the doctor prepared the IV that would be inserted in to his arm. "Will I lose my hair?" Luke asked the doctor.
"It depends on how the chemo effects you." The doctor said, making Luke frown and reach up to touch his curls, he just started to love his curly hair.
The doctor then approached Luke and picked up his arm, "your husband is outside isn't he? Would you like him to come in?"
Luke shook his head, "no, no, I don't want him to see this." Luke said, "and he's just my boyfriend, so far."
The doctor smiled, rubbing an alcohol covered cotton bud across Luke's arm, over a vein. "Okay this might hurt just a little bit." He said as he started to press the needle inside of Luke's arm.
Luke closed his eyes and looked away, clenching his jaw at the pain, he always hated needles. When it was fully in, Luke looked over to see the drip was in and going inside of his arm. Luke looked to the doctor, "what are the side effects?"
"You may feel nauseas after for a few hours, then in the long term it could leave to stomach pains, muscle pain, headaches and in some cases pain from nerve damage." He explained.
"Nerve damage?" Luke repeated worriedly.
The doctor gave him a sympathetic look, "it's not likely to happen but if it were to, we'd change your treatment."
Luke nodded and sat back against the bed, "okay."
The doctor nodded, "I'll be back in ten minutes, are you sure you don't want your boyfriend?"
Luke hesitated, "let him in." Luke decided.
The doctor left, but only a few seconds later the door opened and Reece stepped in. He shut the door and faced Luke, looking at the drip. "Oh."
Luke nodded, "just sit and hold my hand, no talking." He said, letting Reece sit beside him and entwining their hands. Luke stayed quiet and took in steady breaths, concentrating on Reece and not the drip. "He said it could cause nerve damage, and nausea, stomach and muscle pain, headaches." Luke added, "please don't let my hair fall out Reece."
Reece squeezed Luke's hand, "sometimes there's side effects, but they mean you're getting better, like your hair falling out. You get worse to get better."
Luke sighed, "okay."
They stayed together until the drip had finished, a nurse came in and took the IV from Luke's arm. She put a plaster over the mark, "okay so remember what your cycle is?" The nurse asked, as this was Luke first session.
"Everyday this week, then none for three weeks to help build healthy cells, then we do that again for six months." Luke said, recalling what the doctor had told him before during their consultation.
"Good." The nurse smiled, "you can head home now, take it easy, eat like normal, if you feel sick then you take the medication that was given to you. Any other pains and you tell us." The nurse continued, "other than that, you're done for today."
Luke smiled, thanking her. He stood up, still holding Reece's hand. They left the room and then the treatment clinic. They got in the car and Luke sighed, "I fucking hate needles."
Reece hummed, "me too, I faint when I have them."
Luke laughed lightly, "of course you do."
"You're more brave than me." Reece reminded him as they drove away. "Still want Jess to come round?"
