Kashima Ryuichi is an ordinary boy, alike with many others, he doesn't wish to lose his loved ones. Especially his younger brother, Kotaro.

After the Kashima brothers lost their parents in a plane accident, they were taken in by Morinomiya Youko, and then they became a part of the Babysitting Club.

"Excuse me...is Kashima Ryuichi here?"

One fateful day, she came.

Now, Ryuichi was never one to fall in love so easily. Kotaro was his top priority. Even Ushimaru (Yuki) and Inomata (Maria) can't get past that little baby-brother-barrier.

Albeit Red Bean Rice had been made many times by Saikawa, the teen might never understand the true nature of romantic love.

Y/n, on the other hand, didn't mean to be attracted to her classmate. Some would (probably) want a husband like Ryuichi. But Y/n's not ready for that kind of thing.

It's not that they hate each other. They're simply strangers.

But little did they know, that the longer they bonded in the Daycare Room, the deeper they fell into that abyss.

Love.
What is love?

Well, for Ryuichi, love is something that is worth more than anything else in the world. Love grows bigger when you share it amongst the important people in your life. Despite his parents already dead, there are still people by his side. Most importantly, love...is his little brother Kotaro. And it's everybody else.

For Y/n, she never actually felt love before. Coming from a permanently broken family, you wouldn't expect someone like that to give a sweet, bright smile. Nobody knows. All fake friends, fake love, Y/n is already empty. Love...is but a mere abstract emotion that is essential in a human's life.

"Ryuichi. I have a question."

"Sure. What is it?"

"Are you happy with your life?"

At least that's what they think.

What Ryuichi knows about Y/n, is that they are in the same boat- deceased parents. The thing is, Y/n lied about that. She told the boy that all her other relatives were overseas. The truth was, she had no family left anymore. When she gets home, nobody's there to welcome her. They were on different pages. Let me repeat, permanently broken.

In spite of all that, one thing's for sure, Ryuichi slowly fell in love with her without even realizing it. Having said that, Kotaro knows better. Although he cannot separate from his beloved nii-chan, he can still share.

Y/n and Ryuichi were two divergent people. Even more so than they themselves thought. Like the east and the west, where the sun rises and where the sun sets.

Undeterred by their emotional scars, they still persevere with their lives. Hiding their pain behind smiling masks. Especially for Y/n- nobody must see beyond her covers. But little did she know, Ryuichi figured out.

"Hey, Y/n."

"Oh, Ryuu. Is there something you need?"

"Um...no, not really. I just want to ask you in return...Are you happy?"

Each of them has a method of dealing with life. Ryuichi always tries to look for a way around it, he crosses the bridge once he gets there. Y/n gets salty when things don't go the way she planned and she pushes past it.

Regardless of their differences, they still remained as close friends. The longer it lasted, the more it got better. As the days passed, they became happier. But of course, Ryuichi divided his attention for Kotaro and the rest of his obligations.

"Nee-cha."

"Hm? What is it, Kota-chan?"

Some would even say that Ryuichi and Y/n, including Kotaro, are already a family.

"A drawing?"

"Baa-cha. Saa-cha. Nii-cha. Nee-cha. Family."

Somehow, they were still afraid of saying it.

One fateful day, it came out nowhere.

"What are you saying, doctor?"

"I'm saying, you don't have much time left."

Something other than marriage that could separate two people at death. A problem. An illness.

"No! Death will not do us part! In the afterlife, I will be with you. If we get reincarnated in another life, I will look for you!"

So the days collectively stride. Each passing moment a painful one.

The boy would spend hours on end visiting his beloved in the hospital. On the rare occasions, he would bring everyone else.

And then the dreaded day finally arrived. Though, they wish it never did.

"So...this is where we part ways."

"I guess."

Laying on her white bed, all she could do was move her head and look at her beloved seated right beside her.

"Ryuu, I have a favour."

"What is it?"

He takes her hand and grips it tight, not wanting to let go.

"Don't cry too much for me, okay?"

They fell silent. The only sound was the slow beeping of her heart monitor.

"Are those your last words?" The boy jokingly asks.

The girl rolls her eyes. "It's not just that. I want to say a lot of things to you and to everyone. But if you go to my house, you'll find my last will and testament there."

"Seriously?"

"Yeah. The key is with you. Just go into my room and look for a dusty old box."

"Heh. Alright, I will."

Just then, the beeping was slowing down.

"Y/n?!"

"Ryuu...don't call the doctors anymore. My time has come."

"What...?"

"I love you, Kashima Ryuichi."

It was all too sudden- at that moment of a flatline, his heart dropped to a darker abyss.

And with that, her life had slipped away from his fingers.

"I love you too, L/n Y/n."

The End.

A/N: To be honest, my original plan was for Ryuichi to kill himself...but I might be hated for that...
