Calvin's POV
I felt Paige shoot up from the hard mattress. Her breathing was labored and heavy.
I sat up with her, wrapping my arms around her trembling body. She was sobbing profusely.
"No, no, Paige. It's okay. It was just a nightmare. You're fine. You're here with me. It's okay." I said, as gently as possible. She buried her face on my shoulder. I felt her tears on my bare chest. I stroked her straight hair softly and kissed the top of her head.
I gave her a tight squeeze before slowly pushing her back down onto the bed. I lay back down next to her and encased her with my body. Her breathing went steady. I listened for a couple minutes. Just taking in her flower scented hair. I checked the clock on my desk briefly. 1:47 AM. It was still pitch black outside.
As I peered out the window I saw a figure on the street, holding a flashlight coming towards my house. I frowned. What the hell? I thought to myself. Trying not to wake Paige, I got out of the bed slowly.
When I got to the door I heard a small voice. As quiet as a mouse.
"Cal?" Paige said in a whisper. I halted in my tracks.
"Yes, hon?" I asked her quietly.
"Where are you going?" She asked me. Her voice was so sweet and cute I just wanted to go back to bed and cuddle up next to her. I sighed,
"Nowhere hon, just the bathroom." I winced at the white lie. I'd never lied to her before. But, I didn't want to worry her, or put her in any kind of danger. She mumbled a barely coherent agreement before drifting back to sleep.
I grabbed a t-shirt before quietly closing the door and making my way down the stairs.
My heart almost stopped beating when I saw a shape sitting at the couch, looking aimlessly out into space. I exhaled loudly when I realized it was Mason.
"Mason? What are you doing up?" I asked my brother. I was still angry at him from the fight yesterday. He made a grunt-like sound.
"Nothing. What are you doing up?" His voice was low and rough. I shook my head and joined him on the couch. "Is Paige fine?"
"Um, yeah." What does he care? I thought to myself. Suddenly we heard a quiet knock at the door. I started to get up when I felt Mason's strong arm push me back down.
"I got it." He said gruffly. "Go back to bed." I scowled at my brother and started up the stairs. I stopped at the top of the steps and listened. The person walked in and dropped their bag on the floor with a thump. I looked over the top of the staircase and saw it was a girl. She had wrapped her legs around Mason's waist and they were kissing.
I looked away. "Girlfriend?" I asked myself before making my way back to my room.
When I walked into the room I was greeted by Paige, her pacing making a dent in the carpet. She halted when she saw me, her face was a mix of anger and worry.
"Bathroom?" She said, "Where were you Calvin?" Her voice was demanding. I sighed and grabbed her hands.
"I saw someone. Through the window. Mason's girlfriend I guess." I said. Paige exhaled in relief.
"Calvin, don't scare me like that, I heard a knock and I just thou--" I cut her off with a quick kiss.
"I'm fine," I smiled at her, "Sleep now?" I asked her gently. She rolled her eyes and we cuddled up in the sheets. "Goodnight Paige." I felt her face against my neck.
"Goodnight Calvin." There was sarcasm in her voice. I sighed and closed my eyes, falling asleep with the picture of Mason kissing some girl I didn't even know.
I was still wondering about those drugs. How long had he been high? What other secrets was he keeping?
