Emily's POV (Calvin's Mom)
"Mom!?" My son's voice rang out over my groaning.
"Oh my gosh! Calvin!" I screamed in horror as I turned around.
Calvin was standing there in extreme shock clutching his girlfriend's arm tightly. They both did a one-hundred-eighty degree turn and walked out of the room, slamming the door behind them.
I swore under my breath. "You've got to be fucking kidding me." I looked at the man under me. I'd met him at the bar last night and we just seemed to have clicked. "I am, so sorry Owen." I said to him, "It's my son, I just, I really wasn't expecting anyone." Owen laughed nervously. I had obviously scarred him for life.
"Oh, it's fine Emily, really. Go take care of it, I'll just head home." He said to me. I sighed as I pulled on a skirt and a tank top.
"I'm so sorry." I apologized again. I gave him a sad look before exiting my room.
Paige's POV
Calvin and I had run downstairs like bullets after walking in on his mother. Calvin leaned against the far wall and slumped down to the floor with a loud sigh.
"What the hell is going on?" He asked me, I shook my head,
"I have no idea." I slid down next to him and put my head on his shoulder. We stayed still, listening to Calvin's mom's footsteps coming down the steps. As soon as she reached the bottom of the staircase she bolted over to us and brought us into a hug.
Calvin pulled away to look at his mom's face. "What the hell, mom." He said quietly.
"I'm so sorry, honey. I wasn't expecting anyone, you should've given me a call, really. I can't believe you had to see that." She ran a hand through her dirty blond hair and closed her eyes in embarrassment.
I put a hand on my chin awkwardly. "It's okay Ms. Ergott." I tried to comfort her.
"No, it's not; and please, call me Emily. After what you just saw, you might as well." She put a hand on my shoulder. I blushed and looked at my feet.
Just then, the man Emily was having a "fun time" with came downstairs in a jacket and sweatpants.
I watched as Calvin tried to hide his face of hatred and disgust.
The man gave us a uneasy smile before marching awkwardly out the door.
We were quiet for a whole minute, then Calvin finally spoke up.
"Who. The. Hell. Is. He?" He asked his mom, pausing between every word.
Emily put two fingers to her temples.
"Name's Owen. Met him at Gracy's Bar last night."
Again, silence. No one spoke. Suddenly, Calvin made a sound as if he was choking. His face was covered with his large palm, but I could still make out his raised cheeks. Then I realized, not choking. Chuckling.
I raised my own hand to my lips to hide my slow rising grin. Emily's eyes were darting back and forth between the two of us, confusion sprawled across her face.
Calvin's chuckle turned into a childish giggle, then a devilish laugh and finally, all three of us stood, holding our abdomens, guffawing uncontrollably.
It felt so exhilarating to laugh. I hadn't smiled this much in so long. Soon we were all sitting at the breakfast table sharing stories about the good old days. We laughed and talked and I felt joy in just being there. In the company of the love of my life and a person with a kind heart.
My eyes wandered over to the window as Calvin and his mom made some more coffee. I stared at the shimmering snow, my face beaming. I sighed, my mind at peace.
Then he had to ruin it all. By he, I mean Calvin's father.
His posture was lopsided and he seemed to be having trouble walking normally. He wore a brown suit, the shirt half untucked and the tie almost coming off. I noticed the beer bottle in his left hand as he ambled clumsily up to the front yard.
"Cal." I said. He didn't hear me, as he was in the middle of an important conversation with his mom about buying a new fridge. "Calvin." I said again, this time a little louder. He still didn't reply.
" CALVIN! YOUR DAD IS WALKING UP TO THE FRONT DOOR!!" I yelled, as his dad stumbled over some rocks.
Calvin and his mom turned around so quickly I thought they'd broken their necks. Calvin's expression turned to worry, then anger, then hate and then back to worry.
He pulled me away from the table, "Go stand with my mom in the kitchen, Paige." He said sternly. "The bastard is obviously drunk." He added as I gave him a warning look that said 'be careful.'
His dad entered with a loud, drunken, "HELLOOOO AMERICA."
My eyes were struck with fear as Emily pulled me closer to her. I watched through the kitchen doorway as Calvin grabbed his dad's arm and sat him down on a chair.
Calvin's POV
"What are you doing here, Robert." I spat out, calling my dad by his first name.
"What? No simple, 'hey dad, how's it goin?' for your old pops?" Robert asked, his words were beginning to slurr. I felt my expression change to disgust.
"Dad? You, are not my dad." I said harshly, "My dad, was a kind-hearted man, he loved his family. In fact, he lived for his family. I have no idea who you are."
