Paige's POV
She was beautiful. She was born with her coffee bean eyes wide open, and a full head of curly, cocoa brown, hair. Her light, beige skin as soft as a bed of feathers.
I listened as Calvin choked on his breath. Hot tears threatened to spill from my eyes. The lump in my throat turned into a quiet whimper.
I couldn't take my eyes of her. My daughter. Mine.
"Hi baby," Calvin whispered to the newborn girl in my arms. I couldn't stop smiling. I almost couldn't believe this was all really happening.
"That's your daddy," I said in a low voice to the infant. Her perfect little lips curled slightly at the sides.
"So? What are you gonna to name her?" One of the nurses asked us gently. I looked at Calvin's happy face. He stared back at me.
"Kimberley?" Calvin suggested. I gave him a halfhearted smile.
"I was thinking," I said, pausing to give my baby girl a kiss on her forehead. "Sasha," I said. Calvin's face expanded into a big grin.
"Your mother's name," he said. I nodded and smiled wider.
"Hi Sasha," I said, "Welcome to the big, wide world," Sasha's eyes seemed to brighten. She was so quiet, even when she first came out, she hadn't even cried. The only way we knew she was breathing was when she let out a long sigh. I laughed quietly.
"Hey, Sasha cake," Calvin said, settling by my side on the bed. The nurses around us smiled and started moving around again.
"We'll get you her vital numbers and all the details in a little bit, for now, you three take some rest," Dr. Edman said to us. She turned to one of the other nurses. "Can we get an extra cot in here for Calvin?" The nurses nodded and scurried away quickly. I mouthed a thank you to my boss. Dr. Edman winked and then walked out of the room.
Calvin reached out his hands. I slowly, and reluctantly, let Sasha go to him. All of a sudden I burst out crying. Calvin's face turned into worry.
"Paige, what's wrong?" he asked me, gently rocking Sasha in his arms. I shrugged.
"She's just so beautiful," I sobbed. Calvin's posture relaxed.
"I know. Just like you," he said quietly. I sniffled loudly and wiped away my tears as Calvin moved Sasha softly back to me. Sasha let out a sleepy yawn. Calvin and I cooed in awe. We were probably going to die in her adorableness.
"I love her, she is our baby, our child, our daughter and we are going to do everything we can to protect her and keep her safe," I said sternly to Calvin. Calvin nodded.
"Of course we are, we're her parents," he replied to me. Sasha's eyes began to droop. I used my fingers to gently push her eyelids closed. In less than 15 seconds her breathing reached a slow, steady, pace. In...out...in....out. Calvin and I breathed with her. She was asleep.
Warm tears were still lingering in the corner of my eyes. Calvin sighed and then we both yawned.
"Yeah, sleep," I said for the both of us. Calvin nodded, then smiled.
Just then two nurses came in rolling an extra, white cot with them. They slid it right next to mine and gave the three of us kind smiles.
We said thank you and then they left. Calvin pushed open the covers and helped me adjust my pillows. I put the sleeping Sasha on my left so that she was in between the both of us.
"I love you two," I said. Calvin grinned and closed his eyes.
"I love you two, too," he said. I giggled lightly.
Sasha let out a little sound in her slumber. It was quick and quiet, like a kitten meowing, but still enough to bring a new mother to tears.
"Sleep tight, baby. I love you," I whispered softly into Sasha's ears again.
The little bubble of happiness was growing inside of me. My smile kept growing as I closed my eyes to sleep. My heart was lifted and open and filled with hope.
The joy I was feeling couldn't be explained. You both are my joy, you both are my support and my everything. You both make me so happy. I thought inside my head.
Dreams of us as a family, just being with each other filled my mind as sleep encased me in it's warm arms.
I felt safe right where I was. Right here with the two people I cared about most. The two people that made it worth my while to live and enjoy life. Because right here was where I felt loved. One last thought escaped my mind before I fell fast asleep along with my husband and daughter.
You are loved.
