Paige's POV
My wine glass clinked against Calvin's. "Happy one day engagement anniversary, P." Calvin said with a smirk. It was 8:14 PM, the exact time Calvin had proposed to me the night before. I rolled my eyes. "You haven't even touched your food, hon," Calvin said as his smile faded. I stared at his hair, a little brown strand sticking up from the side of his head. I sighed.
"I just, I guess I'm not that hungry," I cleared my throat. Calvin rested his hand on mine.
"Is it about what you saw last night?" he asked me quietly. I looked away and adjusted the diamond ring on my finger, while looking around the restaurant nervously.
"I, I don't know. It's, it's complicated," I stopped and put down my fork. Calvin didn't say anything. A man in black and white uniform came over to our table.
"How is everything tonight?" the waiter asked. Calvin grunted and looked away. I barely looked up at the man,
"Everything's great," I gave him a halfhearted smile. He obviously felt uncomfortable and left without saying anything more. Calvin stabbed the rosemary spiced chicken in front of him with his knife. I jumped at the sound of the plate clapping against the table.
"You know, we should just leave," Calvin said with a hint of annoyance. I let out a breath and looked at him.
"Calvin, I'm really sorry," I said as I took another sip of apple cider. Calvin lifted a hand to call for the bill. "You're mad at me?" I asked him quietly. He shook his head at me.
"No, I'm mad at Mason. For ruining everything," Calvin said as he folded his napkin into a tiny square. I tucked a strand of my hair behind my ear. The waiter came over and put the bill on our table. $105.89. I brought the paper closer to me to take a better look.
"That's outrageous, we only ordered two dishes and two drinks," I said to Calvin. He didn't even look at me while he took out his dark brown wallet.
We walked out of the restaurant hand in hand and got to the car. Before Calvin could sit inside I stopped him.
"Calvin, stop. You need to talk to me. Tell me what happened last night, I saw an ambulance and that girl! Tell me!" I exclaimed as I grabbed his shoulder. He slowly turned towards me.
"I, I knocked him unconscious, then called 911 and told them he had been on drugs and that his girlfriend was buying them for him and that they should do whatever they see fit with him." Calvin gently shook off my grip on his shoulder and got into the car without saying another word. I stood there in silence.
The window of the driver's seat rolled down and Calvin popped his head out. "You coming, P?" He asked softly. I suddenly felt very cold and a little faint.
"Uh, yeah." I said as I carefully made my way over to the passenger side. I began fiddling with my new ring. I had had it for one day and it had already become my go to nervous tick.
We sat in silence. I was fidgeting with the ring, twisting it around my finger, taking it off and putting it back on. Calvin had both his hands on the steering wheel and was absolutely still except when making a turn.
We pulled into our apartment building parking lot and parked the car. Both of us made no move to get out. I looked at Calvin, he was picking at a piece of string on his jeans. I began tapping my fingers on the dashboard at a rapid pace. I continued this and looked out my window. Suddenly I felt Calvin's warm hand on top of mine. I let my hand fall still and he squeezed my wrist.
"Let's go home Paige. Please, can we forget about last night?" He whispered. His hot breath brushed my earlobe and I realized that he was right up against me. I nodded, but continued staring out the window. I felt his lips graze my neck gently. He placed his hand on my shoulder and began slipping off my blouse. I weaved around to face him.
"Not here. Not now," I said quietly. He pulled back reluctantly and stepped out of the car. I felt a lump form in my throat.
Inside our home we walked in and headed straight to our room. It was only 9 PM but our exhaustion had displayed itself on both of our faces. Plus since today was Sunday, tomorrow we both had work.
We changed and climbed into the bed. I gave Calvin a tired smile through the darkness.
"Second night as an engaged couple!" I said. I was trying to be cheerful and lift our spirits a little. But the tension between us was tugging on both of us.
Calvin smiled a little, gave me a peck on the cheek and turned over onto his side. His back facing me. I exhaled and stared blankly at the ceiling.
Complicated. Yes, complicated. I though to myself. I stayed like that for a couple of minutes before my thoughts engulfed me and I fell asleep.
