Paige's POV; April
"Ow," I mumbled as I slowly stood from my chair. My stomach was swollen to its full span now and it seemed to be still expanding.
"Paige, are you sure you don't want the rest of the day off?" Dr. Edman asked me. I shook my head.
"No, please, I'm okay," I said, giving her a smile. Dr. Edman raised her eyebrows.
"Alright, but you feel any pain I'm sending you to the ER and I'm calling Calvin," she said, her voice strict. My face fell into a grin,
"Thank you Dr. Edman, you've been a great boss," Dr. Edman smiled kindly and began washing her hands.
"You go stretch your legs for a time. My next patient is in another 15 minutes,"
I nodded and shut down my computer. "Wait, Paige," Dr. Edman called before I could step foot out of the room. I turned my head and locked eyes with the doctor.
"When did the doctors say you were due?" she asked. There was concern in her voice. I gave her a mysterious smile.
"Oh, any day now," Dr. Edman's expression turned into surprise. "Any day," I repeated. With that I stepped out of the exam room and started cautiously walking down the hall.
I had one hand on my stomach the entire time. Nurses and doctors passed by, giving me sweet smiles and kind congratulations.
My other hand was tightly gripping my phone as if my life depended on it. I walked into an emtpy hallway. My only company was the smell of caramel. The entire clinic always smelled like caramel. Don't ask me why. I had no idea. But it was pleasant.
I sat down in a chair when I realized that my breathing was labored.
As soon as I sat down I felt something pop, between my legs. It felt like someone had splashed my underside with warm water. Then, to my horror, I'd realized what had happened.
My water had just broke.
I screamed. Luckily I was in a clinic. Multiple people rushed to my aid. I was panting very hard. My contractions weren't giving me any time to adjust.
"My baby is coming, my baby is coming," I kept repeating. Three people came rolling down the hallway with a large hospital bed.
I was in so much pain. My whole body felt numb and my belly felt like someone was stabbing me.
I shrieked again as I slammed my eyes shut. The nurses around me had faces filled with concern but they seemed calm. They tried to reassure me.
"It's okay, Paige, we're taking you to the Emergency Room right now, okay? Just hang in there," one of the nurses said gently. I groaned loudly.
When I opened my eyes again we had rolled into an elevator. Dr. Edman was standing on one side of my bed. She was looking at me with an intense stare.
"Any day, huh, Paige?" she said. Anothet screech escaped my lips. Dr. Edman slipped her phone out from her pocket and started scrolling through something.
She tapped something and then put her phone to her ear. Her eyes widened when the person picked up.
"Hi, Calvin? Yes, it's Dr. Edman speaking...YES I understand Calvin, listen to me..." she had clearly been interrupted. She stood tapping her foot on the floor of the elevator.
I was staring at her with such intensity that my eyes were beginning to hurt. Suddenly I felt another scream coming on along with more contractions.
Before the scream could come out the elevator door slid open and we began rolling to the ER at high speed. Dr. Edman was left behind but I could still hear her shout at Calvin through the phone.
"Your wife is in LABOR, Calvin, come to the ER right NOW!!"
My face managed to twist into a demented smile before I felt all the muscles in my body clench tightly.
We reached the ER. The nurses said some things but I could barely concentrate on that through all the pain I was feeling.
Soon I was laying down in another bed. There were monitors all around me and doctors and nurses and blankets.
A plump nurse with dark skin walked up to my room. "Alright, sugar, I want you to let your legs just fall apart, okay?" her voice was kind and gentle. I followed her instructions as she draped a blanket over my lower half. She took a look. "First time?" she asked me. I nodded and let out a whimper.
Tears were burning my eyes. I yelled and struggled in the bed. 10 minutes or so of being in extreme discomfort passed before Calvin rushed into the room and shuffled beside me.
He dropped his bag and scrambled over to my side. "Paige! You ready, hon? It's okay, you can do this, just stay calm, I'm right here, alright?"
I tried to moan in reply, but a giant lump had formed in my throat.
"Okay, Paige, ready?" the nurse asked me. I nodded nervously.
"PUSH!!"
