Paige's POV
Beep.....beep.....beep.
My eyes opened a crack. I was in a white hospital room, the lights were dim and no one was around. I saw nurses and doctors walking in the hallways outside my room. Blackness.
I woke up a couple hours later. The doctor was in my room whispering quietly to an extremely worried Rachel and Kerry. I could only pick out a few words.
"Near.....damage.....lucky......brain...." His voice was deep. It reminded me a little bit of Calvin's. A teardrop fell before more blackness.
Calvin's POV
My heart was racing. I was riding to the hospital in the backseat of a police car. Ding. A text reached my phone.
Calvin, I'll meet you at the hospital. It was from my mom. She was the last person I wanted to see right now. There was a bandage wrapped around my head, a drop of blood was slowly making its way down my face.
All I could think about was Paige's frail body, lying there in the passenger seat, in so much bloody agony. The image brought tears to my eyes again. I'd brought her to danger. It was all my fault. I let my anger get the best of me. I was such a terrible boyfriend.
We reached the hospital in a matter of minutes. Some doctor named Dr. Rishi told us that Paige was in room number 637. I bolted, looking for my Paige.
635, 636...637. I saw Paige's unconscious body through the window. Paige's best friend, Rachel and her mom, Kerry were sitting outside the room. Rachel was resting her head on Kerry's shoulder, their eyes sagging and red. It was clear that they had been crying.
I sobbed quietly into my palms. Paige had a large cast around her rib cage, and her head was wrapped in thick bandaging.
My head was pounding and I felt sick as I walked in slowly. Her silky hair was spread out on the ivory-colored pillow. She had an oxygen mask covering her mouth. I pulled a chair right next to her bed, laying my head on her stomach and grasping her hand gently. I felt her chest rising and falling in rhythm with her breathing.
In...out...up...down.... Her heart monitor beeped on. I sighed. I wanted her to open her eyes and laugh. I wanted her to tease me and call me an "a-hole." I needed to see her happy smile, her grin that completed me.
Suddenly I felt her hand tighten her grip around mine. I looked up quickly. Her eyes were open, just slightly enough that I could see a sliver of hazel. She gave me a weak smile, tears spilling from her eyes. I was breathless. Just feeling her move made me giddy with happiness.
"Calvin." She rasped, tenuously pulling the mask off her face. I leaned in closer to her face and pressed my lips to her pale, water splotched cheek.
"Paige." I whispered back, I caressed her face, she smiled, a little wider. "I--I'm sor---"
"I love you, Calvin." Paige cut me off. She blinked. I buried my face in her bedsheets and held her hand tighter. Her hand went limp again. I looked up, her eyes were closed. Instantaneously her heart monitor let out a long, steady, beeeeeeep. I almost screamed as four or five doctors along with six nurses rushed in, they pushed me out of the way.
"What's happening? Please! Tell me!!" No one said anything to me, one dreadful prayer reaching my brain. Please, don't die, Paige. Rachel and Kerry had stood up outside the room, they're faces contorted to fear. I stood in a corner of the room in sadness and anger, just watching the doctors and nurses scrambling around the room. They pushed on her chest in a steady rhythm, pumping oxygen into her system.
"She's gone into cardiac arrest. Her pulse is too slow." One of the doctor's said to another nurse. The nurse nodded and put a needle into Paige's arm that was connected to an IV bag.
10 seconds passed and then Paige's heart monitor relapsed. The speed returned to a steady beat. Beep....beep....beep. My knees buckled underneath me and I almost collapsed. I ran over to the edge of her bed and kissed her wrist. Rachel and Kerry burst into the room, hurrying over to the other side of Paige's bed. Kerry rested her hand on Paige's arm. Her eyes flickered open at Kerry's touch. A pang of jealousy struck my hurting heart.
"Paige." Kerry and I whispered at the same time. Paige looked at me and grinned. She had no idea what had just happened.
"Hi, baby." I said to her lovingly. Dr. Rishi took off Paige's oxygen mask and looked at us.
"She will be able to breath on her own now. No stressful activities, keep her calm and happy. A nurse is bringing her lunch now." Dr. Rishi explained. I nodded understandingly and sat back down in the chair. I felt my mom's shadow hover behind me. She put a hand on my shoulder. I flinched at her fingertips. Paige's hazel eyes glazed over. She looked dazed.
"Calvin." Paige said. I cupped her cheek with my palm.
"Yes, Paige, I'm here. Anything you want." I told her. She smiled a little.
"Can I have a kiss?" She asked, her voice so endearing. I had never been so relieved to kiss her than right then.
"Of course." I brought my lips closer to her's until they brushed against each other lightly. She sighed contentedly. I closed my eyes as we shared our passionate moment. My mom had disappeared. I was glad she had left.
"Paige, I love you," I paused, "I love you too much to ever let you go." I repeated. She blinked at me,
"Me too, I love you too, Cal." Paige's eyes were closing again. "But, I need to sleep. I'm so..." Her words drifted into a yawn. She rested her head back down on the pillow and closed her eyes fully, falling asleep almost immediately.
I swiped away an escaping tear and rested my head on Paige's heart. I never wanted to leave her side. Ever.
Just then I realized that I wanted to spend the rest of my life with her. With Paige. With the only girl that I could ever truly love. She was my Paige. She was my one and ONLY.
