Chapter Four

--------------------

Putting away my textbook and binder for lunch, I stepped back and closed my locker.

"Whoa!" Kevin had appeared out of nowhere as I closed my locker. He laughed at my surprise. "You scared me!"

"Sorry," he said with a small smile. "I was just looking for you. I'm not sure where the cafeteria is."

"Oh, okay," I said shrugging. I was suddenly distracted by the blue of his eyes. "It's um, on the, um, first floor. I-I'll show you the way," I said gesturing for him to follow. He nodded and I noticed I couldn't look away until his eyes were out of my sight. Taking a deep breath, I led the way down the stairs and towards the large cafeteria. The voices of chatter that usually emented for the students disappeared the second we walked in. All eyes fell on us, or more specifically, him. I glanced at him but he didn't seem to notice the sudden silence. I dragged him towards the lunch line as the voices started to pick up again, probably gossiping about the "hot guy" they had just seen.

Lucy was standing at the front of the line and motioned for me to get behind her.

"Hey! No cuts!" a girl in the line yelled. Kevin stopped even though I was telling him it was okay and that we could go to the front of the line. He turned his eyes on the girl who had spoke up. Her jaw dropped.

"I'm sorry, should I go to the back of the line."

"N-no," she said shaking her head. "Of course you can cut. I-I was just kidding," she stuttered. My eyebrows merged in surprise. Was he that good looking enough that people would let him cut the long line. Apparently so. Again, I dragged him to the front of the line as he smiled at everyone. Lucy made some room for us at the front of the line.

"Hey Kevin!" Lucy said to him. "You'll want to sit at our table. Christian and Daniel will be sitting with us." Kevin glanced down at me and it was until that moment did I realize how much taller he was then me.

"Will you be sitting at that table?" he asked. I nodded. "Then I'll sit at that table," he said with a gleaming smile. My heart fluttered inside my chest. I noticed the line was moving so I stepped forward. I grabbed a salad and a bread stick. He grabbed the same thing and my lips turned up in a small smile. After paying for our food, we headed towards the table where Daniel, Christian, Ashley, and Lucy were already seated. I saw down and began to eat my salad.

"So how's your day so far?" Ashley asked as Kevin took the seat beside me.

"It's good," he replied. A couple giggles erupted from behind us. Lucy, Ashley, and I turned around to see a small possy of girls in the most revealing outfits standing there. The one who stood at the front had short blond hair tied into two side ponytails. She had been the one I spoke to outside of the office.

"What do you want?" Lucy snarled. I wanted to do the same. This was the annoying little troop of eleventh grade girls who always acted up and got into trouble. They were annoying and loved to pick on anyone below them on the "status" scale.

"Nothing much," the one at the front answered. "Well actually, we want him," she said and pointed at Kevin. He had a perplexed expression on his face. My arms crossed my chest. "You should sit with us," she told him, obviously puffing out her chest. I rolled my eyes at her obviousness.

"No thanks, I want to sit here with Fallon and everyone else," he said cocking his head in our direction. I smiled but noticed the girls and even Ashley giving me glares.

"Whatever," she said. "You'll change your mind later."

"Hey Stephanie," a musical voice said stepping up to the blond at the front. My jaw dropped. It was Lovette.

"Hey Love! Come sit with us."

"You can sit with us," Kevin told Lovette patting the empty seat next to him. She stared at him for a moment, then turned away.

"No thanks," she replied. Then went to follow after the trampy girls. Kevin had a pained expression in his eyes.

"She'll come around," I told him. "I think someone like her will get tired of people with such short attention spans. Though I fathom the reason she decided to sit with them today anyways." Kevin nodded but didn't look so sure.

"I actually think it's cause she's jealous."

"Jealous of what?" I asked surprised.

"Jealous of how beautiful you are." I felt my face immediately grow warm as a re d blush emerged. Ashley had her eyes narrowed and fists clenched.

"I'm pretty sure that's not it," I said still feeling slight embarrassed and shy. "I mean her looks compared to mine. If we were the only two in a crowd your eyes wouldn't even give me a second glance." Then Kevin did something so shocking. He lightly put his fingers under my chin and lifted it so that we were eye to eye.

"Don't doubt your beauty. Your gorgeous." My mouth hanged open speechless, and I'm pretty sure I looked like an idiot. A cough suddenly brought me out of my trance. Lovette was standing behind Kevin, her thin hands on her waist. I was pretty sure that half of the cafeteria's eyes were on us and her.

"Kevin, we need to go," she ordered. He dropped his hand and glared at his sister.

"Why?" he asked. She pointed to the direction of the office.

"Dads here." She said, emphasis on the word Dad. I didn't understand why. But obviously Kevin did. His eyes widened and suddenly he was on his feet before I could blink. Whoa, that was really fast!

"Z- Dad, he's here." He said gesturing around the school. Lovette nodded, then glared at me.

"I'm not sure he'd be please about you spending so much time with... mundane humans." Mundane humans? Kevin frowned and stared back at me. "Let's go," Lovette grabbed his arm and pulled with such force that he almost tripped. Wow! Where did she get that strength! "We can't keep Dad waiting." Kevin nodded and then glanced back at me as he ran out the door.

"Uh, see you guys. Bye Fallon!" My eyes slowly watched as he left.

"It's Fall," I whispered.
