Chapter 7:
Party's Over
"Woah that one was huge! Hey guys, aren't the fireworks sick?" Blake shouts as he walks towards the bench.
And just like that, the moment ends. Everything that had just turned blurry around us was back to normal. The once quiet, slow, faded music is now loud and fast again. The fireworks are louder than before.
As though someone has snapped their fingers in front of our eyes, the little gap between mine and Zac's lips becomes suddenly very apparent to the both of us, and we sit up straight, putting some space between us, turning to face our friends.
Sophie, Blake, Steven, George and most of the others who sit at the table at lunch are all walking towards us. Steven is staring wide-eyed right at me; he's clearly seen what has almost just happened.
"Yeah, they look great! But if you're all here, then who is actually in control of the fireworks?" Zac replies, trying to act normal.
"My dad hired someone to come and do them so that I could sit back and watch the show. Also, there was no way that he was ever going to trust a bunch of drunk teenagers to deal with fireworks." She laughs.
Steven comes and sits next to me, he has this half-confused, half-smug look on his face and I can tell that billions of questions are whizzing around in his head.
"I don't even know."
They're the only words I manage to quietly say back to him because honestly, I have no clue about what has just nearly happened.
Was Zac really going to kiss me?
What if we'd had five more seconds before Blake shouted?
But most of all, what did Zac mean when he said that he liked me?
I'm struggling to process everything that has just gone on; everything is turning into one big blur.
I look up to the sky, staring at the display of different fireworks as the group sit around the bench laughing, pointing and cuddling up to one another under the blankets.
As we watch, Zac subtly moves his hand under the blanket so that it's close enough to mine that our skin brushes against one another. He keeps his focus on the fireworks, purposely trying not to look at me.
I quickly finish my drink, and that's when I realise that I need one that's a lot stronger.
***
The party's now at its peak. By peak, I mean that stage where everyone is very happy and in a great mood but starting to get incredibly drunk. The peak of a party is like that stage before everything turns ugly.
I'd stopped drinking about an hour ago. I'd had more than enough, and my head was starting to feel heavy. I can't handle drinking a lot anymore. I don't like drinking much nowadays, not as I did back in England.
