Chapter 23:

Sugarcoated Truths

I pull the covers up, over my cold shoulders, in an attempt to stay wrapped up in my warm, comforting bed.

Rolling over, Zac's face has the tiniest frown on it, something I've noticed he does in his sleep, alongside the mumbling and teeth grinding. Last night was the first time Zac has ever stayed the night, something which I haven't told my mum about and I am already picturing the conversation that will be taking place upon her realising.

It wasn't planned for Zac to stay over. After we were removed from Amelia's party, kicking and screaming, the group took a long walk home to cool off. Despite the walk containing lots of shouting, disagreements, Blake's disapproval and George's laughter at the way I almost took Amelia to the ground, it somehow worked in expressing everyone's built up tension from the last few days. Zac had agreed to walk me home and wanted to make sure I was okay following the drama, so I suggested he stayed.

After arriving home in the early hours, we both stayed up in my room talking everything through, he reassured me that Amelia had come on to him out of nowhere and he played no part in it, something that I already knew. I know Zac would never do that to me, especially with someone he despised like Amelia.

Zac listened to me vent, worried about how angry I'd been both at Blake's beforehand over the news Sophie told me and at the party. He held me tight in his arms as I rested my head on his chest, feeling the rise and fall of his deep breaths and occasional signs as his biggest fears were coming true. I am now Amelia's worst enemy and as Steven had warned all along, she's only going to get worse and nothing is about to stop her in her mission to take me down.

I take my phone off of my nightstand, clearing my notifications from our group chat, which are all about last night. My finger hovers over the tab to open the school feed, I know the kind of posts that will be waiting for me there and my mind becomes torn in a battle between curiosity and insecurity.

Unfortunately curiosity gets the better of me.

The feed is full of new posts. The first few are the ones I was hoping would be the majority of posts on the feed this morning; people posting pictures from the party with their friends, however it isn't long before I see exactly what I was dreading.

'Woah, who's seeing Lola vs Amelia in the hallway???" One reads.

'This was the kind of party I was after, there's always drama at an Oakmore party, especially when Liam is involved, did you see the way he just strolled onto the scene." Another reads.

I continue to scroll, reading post after post. Some catch my attention more than others.

'Yet again more drama between Amelia and the popular group- BORING!'
