Chapter 18:
The Devil Returns
Amelia.
The word is ringing in my ears.
Blood pumps furiously through my body, flushing my cheeks a deep shade of red. My eyes bore into her cold, piercing stare.
Once again she shuffles in her seat, kissing her teeth,
She is back.
But how? The last thing everyone knew was that she was stuck in some boarding school in New Hampshire, not back here at Oakmore. How did we have no idea she was coming back?
Then the realisation set in. Without our phones, due to the traditions, we have been oblivious to the news which has surely sent the whole feed wild. At least the strange looks and whispers from everyone now make sense.
The group stays standing still, staring in disbelief. I look up at their stone cold faces, wondering who will be the first to break the staring competition with their harsh words.
"What are you doing here?" Sophie says, her voice flooded with emotions; hurt, anger, disbelief.
Her outburst takes me by surprise. Her usually sweet tone has been replaced with a sharp one which booms through the silent cafeteria. I can tell that the rest of the group are just as shocked as I am at the fact that she's been the first to speak, yet relief is written all over their faces as it feels as though the tension has been cut by a knife.
"Oh Sophie, how glad I am that you asked. I was beginning to wonder how long we'd all play the silent game for. I'm just here trying to eat lunch, you know catch up with my old friends, in my usual seat. This is still my usual seat isn't it?" Amelia asks, the sarcasm in her voice so evident, the heat from the anger in the room starts to rise.
The group stare back again, registering her reply. She clears her throat, ready to speak once again.
"Oh you mean back here at Oakmore? I've been transferred back-"
"Permanently."
At this point the whole group stands up straight, almost as if they've been struck by lightning. Can this be serious, is Amelia back for good?
For George, he'd heard too much from the girl who had tried to ruin his life.
"Hold up a minute. You're telling me that Oakmore has let you back? After everything you did to everyone? After everything you've done to me?" Rage fills his voice as he continues to stare in disbelief.
His mouth hangs open and I can't tell if he is shocked or on the verge of tears.
"George." Zara says, facing him, trying to get his attention so she can try to stop the scene which is unfolding.
