"i die every night with you"

***

"Everyone would you please gather in the living room so we can sing happy birthday?" Grace calls out to the crowd and Olivia turns away from Gilbert's smoldering stare.

People push into the room and Olivia walks back over to her friends with a grin on her lips. "What's got you all smiley?" Diana asks her friend suggestively. She rolls her eyes.

"Oh, nothing." She shrugs and her mother takes her by the arm, leading her to the middle of the room where Isaac, Charles, and the cake were.

"Happy birthday to you-" the room begins to sing along with the family and Ollie feels a presence next to her. It was Gilbert.

After the song, Isaac goes to blow out his candles but his sister stops him. "You have to make a wish silly."

"I have everything I would ever want right here." He smiles at his family, grabbing his mothers hand and then proceeding to blow out the candles.

"Now if everyone would join us for sparklers and popsicles outside that would be lovely." Grace says, leading Olivia into the kitchen to bring out trays of frozen watermelon that she had Olivia crush to make a juice earlier that day.

"Who's that dark-haired boy that I saw you talking to earlier?" She asks Ollie.

"Gilbert Blythe." Olivia responds, grabbing one of the trays.

"Is he the son of Jon Blythe?"

The young girl shrugs. "Probably considering there's only one Blythe family in Avonlea. Why?"

"I don't want you associating with him." Grace says sternly and Olivia looks to her mother in shock.

"Why not?" Olivia had just forgiven him and she was looking forward to being his friend. As much fun as it was to torture him with being snotty she much preferred to be nice as he was a kind boy. Not to mention whenever she looked or talked to him she had butterflies in her stomach that she wondered if he felt too.

"Because I said so." Grace states

"That's not a reason!" Olivia raises her voice and her mother places her hands on her hips.

"I said you can't talk to him and that is final. If I see you interacting with him I will forbid you to talk to your friends as well." Grace snaps and tears water in Olivia's eyes. With a saddened sigh, she turns and walks outside, putting the tray on an empty table. Everyone around her was laughing and holding up sparklers that her father had spent a lot of money on. Pushing her way through the crowd, Olivia grabs a firework for herself and lights it, wondering if she wished and blew it out the wish would come true.

"What's wrong?" Someone says to Olivia and she looks up to meet Gilbert's eyes. The conversation she just had with her mother flashes through her mind.

"Mothers." She shakes her head, looking away.

"I know how you feel. Or, kind of. My mother died giving birth to me but my father and I had and still have our fair share of fights." He laughs but furrows his eyebrows in confusion when Ollie doesn't crack a smile. "I hope just because we're friends now doesn't mean you'll take it easy on me in school."

Olivia snorts. "Oh please, in your dreams."

"There she is." Gilbert teases and they get lost in each other's gazes. Olivia swears she sees him lean in closer to her but it's not confirmed until he takes a step forward. For a moment she wonders what would happen if they kissed. Her mother would surely be furious and she would lose all rights to talk to Anne, Diana, and Jerry. Not to mention Grace would probably pull her out of school and forbid her to leave the house.

Was it all worth it for a simple kiss?

Part of Olivia screamed 'Yes! Kiss him!' but the more rational part of her realized what good would it do?

Stepping back, Gilbert's eyes widen as he realizes she completely dissed him. Turning, she runs towards the stable. Gilbert calls her name but she ignores him and he bows his head in embarrassment. She obviously didn't feel the same way he did. Spinning on his heel he walks back to the party.

Little did either of them know that Josie Pye was watching the whole thing with a smug smile on her face.

Now that Olivia was out of the way, what was stopping her from moving in on Gilbert.

The answer?

Nothing.
