CHAPTER THIRTEEN; TRIALS AND TRIVILATIONS
"So, I noticed you and Gilbert talking by the door. Want to tell me about it?" Anne asks, changing into her nightgown.
The two had just finished playing their game of knight and princess and were exhausted and full from the meal.
"There's nothing to tell, I was just seeing him out." Olivia smiles, running a brush through her hair which has now grown to an awkward length. It's at the stage right before a pixie cut but longer than it was weeks ago.
"Of course, seeing him out." She nods, turning to Olivia. "Is that what the kiss was for?"
At her words, Olivia almost drops her hairbrush. "What are you going on about? There was no kiss."
Anne scoffs. "Right. And my hair will grow back blonde."
Olivia laughs. "Now that would be a sight to see." She grabs her blue nightgown and puts it on.
"You're avoiding the question," Anne states, getting into the bed.
"Okay, fine. I gave him a kiss on the cheek but it's not as big of a deal as you think it is." Olivia huffs, hopping into bed next to her friend. Anne reaches forward and pulls the covers over them.
For a second Olivia doesn't think she's going to say anything. "Have you talked to him about everything that happened?" Anne asks.
"I was going to before he left but he told me to tell him when I was fully ready for it." She says with a smile.
Anne pushes herself to a sitting position. "Tell me if this is too forward but...do you still like Gilbert?"
Olivia's heart stops for a second as she hears the question. No, that's the answer. Right? She couldn't still possibly like Gilbert, could she?
"No, we're just friends." Olivia shakes her head.
Anne hesitates before responding. "Well, wasn't the only problem your mother? Because she didn't want you dating him? She's not here anymore so it's okay if you-"
Olivia cuts her off. "Stop. I don't want to talk about this right now. I came here to have a sleepover with my best friend, not to gossip about boys." She says sternly.
Anne nods, casting her eyes down.
A pang of guilt hits Olivia. "I'm sorry, that was harsh of me. I just want to spend time with you instead of worrying about what I should or could do." She says softly, putting her hand on Anne's shoulder.
Anne nods and turns away from her friend. Olivia is about to speak again until suddenly, Anne hits her in the face with a pillow.
She's stunned but is quick to retaliate, grabbing a pillow of her own. "Oh, you are so dead."
_
The great Pantomime of Avonlea went as smoothly as one could expect. Olivia was able to finish up her help and even watch the end from the audience. She was mesmerized by Anne's performance, as was the rest of the crowd.
