Nowa
It was late, the house was dark and quiet. It has been hours since Ghaith told me about him wanting a divorce. I didn't get out of my room since then, Dana knocked on the door for hours trying to understand what was going on with me and why I didn't come to eat dinner and why I locked the door after Ghaith left the room. I didn't answer. I stayed in the room and thought about what I shall do.
Moments later, I felt an extreme pain in my legs, It happened semi-regularly so I went to take my occasional dose of morphine but I found that the amount that the doctor had given me ,finished.
The pain was unbearable and I wanted to scream but I held myself from doing so. Suddenly I heard a knock on the door, "Nowa, open the door," I heard his knock but the pain was soo strong that I couldn't move.
"I have an extra key, you know," He explained. "I am going in," He stated before he barged in.
"How bad is the pain?" Ghaith asked simply when he sow me.
I groaned, "I'm not in pain. I'm just upset that I sow your face,"
He snorted, "There's no point in hiding, Nowa. I know this look in your face, you're in pain."
"I'm always in pain," His eyes flashed a warning.
"Are you okay?" He asked sounding surprisingly worried.
"Just peachy," I replied dryly, moving so I was sitting up straighter in the bed.
"Don't lie to me."
"I'm not," I challenged.
Ghaith didn't seem ready to give up yet. Reaching forward, he put his hand on my cast , a simple feather-light touch, "Nowa, it's ok-"
"Don't touch it!" I snarled as my teeth bared and my eyes sparking with inner fire. Rage or pain, possibly both.
"I'll get help, okay?" He heavily breathed. "I will call Fida, Don't move!" He warned.
Who the Hell is Fida ? I questioned.
"Trust me if I could, I would run," I spat as I sow him walk away.
When Ghaith and a women came in, I was curled up in bed, having flopped onto the left side to make sure I didn't trap my bad leg underneath me. I had my eyes squeezed shut and jaw locked into a grimace. My hands clutched at my leg, trying to rub the sudden increase in pain away that I couldn't reach because of the cast.
"Are you alright?" The women who I presumed was Vida asked hesitantly.
I shook my head, breathing in shaking, hard gasps as I still had my eyes shut.
Fida sighed as I could hear a mature, motherly voice ask, "Sweety. What's the number of the pain your feeling from one to ten?"
"Six," Came the quiet reply.
I was feeling more or less than that number but I knew this wasn't the worst I felt so I gave it what I thought was best to describe how much I could hold on before I will die.
"So it's a nine. Good to know." Ghaith spoke.
" Now, I'm going to get your leg uncramped."
I nodded minutely, breathing hard. Fortunately, my mind finally went blank after that.
*********
I don't know how long it has taken them to wake me from my stupor. But when I finally blink and focus to look around me, Dana is sitting beside me and Inan is opposite me, mirroring my position.
