We're back beneath the bleachers and again I'm left to wonder why exactly we are here instead of somewhere else. But the guys were ready for school early today. They had to beg me to hurry up with the excuse of "being late." I think they wanted to find Kayla. We haven't seen her since we made the deal Saturday night and yet she keeps weaseling into our conversations despite my attempts to change the subject. Jax has another joint in his hand and Ryder has a cigarette in his, but the rest of us are just standing here kicking up the dust.
I look through the bleachers out at the other students forced to be here. I'm not surprised when my eyes latch onto her as she works her way through the masses. I am surprised however that she is tugging that brunette behind her. The brunette seems to be letting her, like she gave up fighting Kayla a long time ago. Kayla breaks free from the crowds but still keeps walking in the same direction, towards the bleachers, towards us.
"I don't see how this is necessary," says the brunette.
"Well it is," Kayla retorts clearly out of her better comebacks. Then she slips under the bleachers with us. We all give her a weird look.
"Okay so boys, this is Lynnie," she says gesturing to the brunette trapped by her wrist.
"It's actually Lynnara," the brunette mutters ducking behind her hair. Kayla ignores her.
"Lynnie, these are the boys. Mini Nic, Ry-Ry, Hatchet, Bash, and Pretty Boy," she says gesturing to all of us in turn, causing us to frown at the nicknames. Lynnara sighs.
"Translation please?" she's still hiding behind her hair. Jax steps forward.
"I'm Jax. That's Dominic, Ryder, Bash and-"
"Kyle," I say cutting in. Lynnara looks up wrinkling her nose. Kayla rolls her eyes.
"You get used to it."
"Doubt it."
"The smell fades away to the back of your mind eventually, trust me." Ryder looks down at his cigarette and drops it, snuffing it out beneath his boot. Jax just inhales more weed.
"Why doesn't Bash have one of your nicknames?"
"Bash already sounds like a nickname, so all I've got is Ba-Ba which is a little weird."
"Oh and Hatchet isn't?" Kayla glares at him.
"It's not." He frowns at her as she finally releases Lynnara's wrist. Lynnara looks back towards the crowds and sighs. She obviously doesn't want to be here. Kayla doesn't seem to care. "So what do you do when waiting for the death toll?"
"That is the most accurate description of the bell I've ever heard," says Bash as Kayla flashes him a proud smile.
"Seriously though, you guys do more than get high and smoke right?"
"We aren't getting high," Jax lies. Kayla snorts and even Lynnara looks doubtful.
"I might be blonde, but I'm not that blonde. You've got a joint in your hand." Jax looks at it and sighs dramatically before dropping it to the ground and stomping it with his foot.
"This is pretty much it for the mornings," Ryder offers with a shrug. Kayla's mouth falls open.
"Oh come on! You guys are supposed to be fun," she whines. "Lynnie only ever wants to hide in the library and read. Please tell me you're kidding."
"My book is really good," Lynnara mutters.
"Yeah and so was yesterday's book and all six from last week. And tomorrow's book will be good too. We've talked about this. Remember living is that thing you're supposed to try at least once a week."
