Kayla steps up to the lunch line. For a split second I think about leaving her there, she'll make it to the bleachers with or without me. Then she glances over her shoulder at me with a smile, and my feet become glued to the ground. I scowl in return. She winks and then turns around to grab her food.Once she has her tray, she returns to my side. The student body starts their normal ripple of whispers and stares in our direction, while Kayla waves Lynnara over. The brunette stands up and follows the command, falling into her own position next to Kayla. Lynnara seems to have already given up on her protest of joining us for lunch. The three of us walk to the bleachers in silence.
Kayla is the first to duck under the bars. Lynnara follows suit, seemingly to stick close to Kayla. I'm betting Lynnara still doesn't trust any of us. She's clearly the smart one. Bash stands up as soon as we enter and dusts his hands off on his dark jeans.
"Don't sit down," he says. Kayla doesn't listen, but Lynnara does. "I tried," he mutters as Jax and Ryder both stand up.
"Surely I don't smell that bad," Kayla says, craning her head up more than usual to look up at them.
"Oh no, that's certainly not the case, Princess. You smell divine," Dominic says, standing up as well. Kayla wrinkles her nose.
"I feel gross," she says.
"We've got another bucket list item to cross off," Ryder says.
"We do?" Kayla asks. She sounds doubtful.
"You wrote the list! We've barely dipped our toes in it!" Jax exclaims throwing his hands out in front of him.
"Well yes, but which item do you have in mind exactly?" She sounds nervous, I tilt my head to the side.
"Uh... climb onto a roof," Jax says, though it sounds more like a question.
"Oh okay. How are we going to do that?" She opens up a bag of chips and pops one in her mouth.
"You can start by standing up and then-" Kayla cuts him off.
"Don't even think about it!" Jax closes his mouth clearly perplexed. "Lynnie, you are coming too. This is your weekly dose of living." We all turn towards Lynnara who stands frozen with her back to us at the edge of the bleachers. "Turn around," Kayla orders.
"Do I have to, Mom?" Lynnara groans as she turns around. So that's why they're friends. When she notices all of us staring at her she makes some sort of strangled squeak and ducks behind her hair.
"I'm really not that bad," Kayla retorts. Lynnara looks up to glare at Kayla, revealing her flushed cheeks. "Hello little tomato!" Kayla calls. Lynnara looks down at her feet. And Kayla laughs before standing up and dusting off her jeans, chips in hand. She tosses another chip in her mouth and scoops up her lunch tray. "So roof climbing?"
"Right, well we won't exactly be climbing on a roof. But we can eat lunch on one," Jax says.
"Where?"
"Here, where else?" Bash answers.
"This school has roof access?"
"Every building has roof access, Good Girl. There's this thing called maintenance," I say rolling my eyes. Kayla turns to glare at me as she bites down harshly on another chip. I step forward and take the chip bag out of her hand.
"What are you-" She stops talking when I reach into the bag and pull out a chip.
"Thanks, Sweetheart."
"You... you- but those are my chips," she whines I just smirk and eat another one. She shoves her tray into Ryder's chest, his hands jerk up to catch it before she lets go. The instinct to save all food is a strong one. She then spins on me, eyes narrowed. I smirk and eat another chip.
