I slide my eyes away from the girl sitting on my desk, effectively ignoring her and the hand that moves to rest on my chest as Kayla marches through the door. Papers flutter in her wake and her glare pierces every person she passes. Several of them practically jump out of her way. I raise an eyebrow, but she doesn't look my way as she throws herself into her seat. She yanks out her binder and a pencil. Her pencil connects with the paper and the lead just snaps."What did the pencil do to you?"
"Shut it, Pretty Boy." I raise my hands in mock surrender and smirk.
"Alright, alright. Reign in the tongue." She turns her glare to me and I can't help but laugh. It hasn't changed much in the past twelve years. The girl on my desk shifts and starts talking again. I swivel my eyes towards her lazily. "Yes?"
"What are you doing... after class?" she questions, leaning forward. I slide my tongue across my bottom lip.
"Depends on what you're doing after class," I answer. Next to me Kayla scoffs.
"I've got time to spare," she trails off, looking at me through her lashes.
"Too bad. He's screwing me after class, so you can get lost," Kayla bites. The girl on my desk looks so shocked I throw my head back and laugh.
"You're the tramp parading around with Dominic. I suppose nothing is stopping you from screwing all of them in the back lot, right?" I shut up real quick. My glare unfolds onto the girl, but her eyes are pinned on Kayla. Kayla smirks.
"You're right, you know," Kayla says with a shrug.
"I am?" the girl mumbles.
"I am a total tart, thanks for pointing that out though. I really appreciate it. But you see here's the difference between me and you. Pretty Boy knows my name. In fact they all know my name and they keep me around. You're just the trash they kick around when they're looking for a quick fix."
"Bitch," the girl sneers.
Kayla doesn't bother flinching. "Right back at you," she sings, shooting the girl a well-rehearsed wink. The girl on my desk hops off and storms away. Kayla slumps back into her seat and sighs heavily.
"What was that all about?" I ask.
"I need you after class for something," Kayla snaps.
"Okay. Geez, no need to be so rude about it," I tell her. My voice is playful, but I don't think Kayla cares.
"Please just butt out!" I fall silent and Kayla doesn't say anything else. The bell rings and Kayla slides over a sheet of paper without a word. We sit in silence, copy the notes in silence, and when the bell rings we get up and walk out in silence.
We burst into the lunch room, drawing twice as much attention to us as usual. But this time Kayla doesn't have to wave Lynnara over, the girl just hurries over unprompted. Kayla spins on her heel and storms out of the cafeteria, leaving the food behind. She walks several paces ahead of Lynnara and me, and she doesn't bother to check and see if we are still following. Lynnara is physically running beside me. I have to pick up my pace and lengthen my strides to keep up with her.
Up ahead I spot Bash leaning against the lockers, chatting up some girl. He doesn't see us, but Kayla certainly sees him. She marches up and steps between the two of them. Then she reaches up and grabs a hold of Bash's ear. She turns to the girl.
"You're free to go now." The girl scoffs and turns away. Kayla continues on, tugging Bash behind her.
"Ow. Ow! Kayla, what the hell?" And if she hears him, she doesn't answer. Kayla leads us all to the bleachers and shoves Bash inside in front of her. She releases his ear and follows him in. I duck under quickly after her and Lynnara follows me.
