Chapter Two: Roommates

A few hours later Haleigh made her way back to her dorm room, her head was down as she walked. She was tryingg not to make eye contact with any strangers. The sun was beginning to set, and she needed to find something to wear to this party. Maybe she would decide to stay in after all, Toby wouldn't miss her. It was just a pity invite.

Moments later Haleigh slid her dorm room key into the lock, twisted the key to the right, and let herself in. She was surprised to find her roommate Samantha sitting cross legged on her bed as she wrote in a spiral notebook. Usually Samantha did her homework in the library where the wifi was better quality.

"Hey Roomie!" Samantha smiled as Haleigh entered their room.

"Hi." Haleigh replied shyly as she set her sketchbook down on her desk. The room filled with an awkward silence, and Haleigh made her way to her closet to see if she had anything that could pass as party attire.

"Hot date?" Samantha wondered as she slammed what looked to be an algebra text book closed. She scooted to the edge of the bed and looked at her normally recluse roommate in confusion. Haleigh's heart thumped loudly in her chest. She hated talking to people she didn't know, deep down she knew this was due to a severe social anxiety, that she should probably go talk to a shrink about. Though she never did anything about it, she just simply told herself it would get better some day. So far that wishful thinking was not working. Beads of sweat started to form on Haleigh's forehead as she realized she was taking too long to answer Samantha's question.

"No." She finally answered, her voice cracking in her throat. "Some frat guy invited me to his party."

"Oh! Kappa Sigma's homecoming bash?" Samantha asked enthusiastically as she stood from her bed. Haleigh shrugged, turning her attention back to her closet. She literally had nothing to wear to a party. All her clothes were black, ratty, and full of holes. "My boyfriend Charles is the president of Kappa Sigma. It's going to be a great party!" Samantha continued, the excitement in her voice was clear. "What are you going to wear!?" Samantha steps in front of Haleigh, looking through the clothing options.

"I probably won't go." Haleigh sighed, as she made her way to her bed, plopping down on the edge.

"You have to go!" Samantha protested, as she pulled out a short red and black plaid skirt. Her enthusiasm seemed to be melting away as she pulled this particular piece of clothing out of Haleigh's closet. "Honey, this is so 2008..." Disgusted, Samantha placed the plaid skirt back into its place in the closet.

"I think I have something that would be perfect for you." Samantha made her way over to her closet and pulled out a pretty black dress, the top of the dress was a pretty see through lace that was bound to show off anyone's cleavage. "Try it on!" She smiled as she handed the dress to Haleigh.

"Here?" Haleigh was not only shy, and socially awkward, she was very self conscious about the way she looked. Although she had no reason to be. Samantha nodded in response, gesturing for Haleigh to hurry up. Quickly Haleigh changed as Samantha thumbed through her phone, probably replying to texts from her boyfriend.

"What size shoe are you?" Samantha smiled at her roommate, obviously pleased with the outfit she had picked out.

"Seven." Haleigh answered. What was going on? Why was Samantha being so nice to her? Letting her borrow her clothes? Haleigh's only friend, ever was Shane. The only time Shane would share clothing with Haleigh was when she was cold and needed a sweater. She wasn't used to this gal pal thing.
