Chapter Forty-Five: Want A Hit?
Haleigh felt as if the weight of the world had been lifted off her shoulders. She leaned her back against Zander's chest, his arms were still wrapped around her waist from when he was trying to prevent her from attacking Alyssa again. His breath hit the back of Haleigh's neck, causing shivers to run up Haleigh's spine. She turned around so that she was facing him. His golden brown eyes stared down at her.
"I'm so sorry Zander." Haleigh began. Regret from everything that had happened earlier in the week began to sink in. She should have been brave enough to stand up for herself. She should have had the courage to fight for the man she loved. She was just glad she had done it tonight.
"Don't be sorry, Hales." Zander smiled at Haleigh, his eyes were full of admiration. "You're bleeding." Zander reached his hand toward Haleigh's face, and wiped away a drop of blood that was dripping from the cheek that had collided with Alyssa's fist.
"I should have just had the courage to kick her ass weeks ago." Haleigh blurted out, ignoring the fact that she was bleeding. Zander chuckled.
"It was pretty hot." Zander laughed. Haleigh swatted at his chest playfully.
"So, you're still in love with me, huh?" Haleigh joked, she smiled up at Zander. The new found courage still lingered.
"You betchya." Zander smiled as he pulled Haleigh close, his lips met hers. Haleigh's heart thumped loudly in her chest as she and Zander stood, kissing in the cold December evening. "Come on." Zander said as he took Haleigh's hand in his, leading her away from the party and toward Zander's apartment.
"What about The Wailing Donkeyz?" The party had just started, the Donkeyz had a whole set to finish.
"They can manage without me, Jackson can sing and play the bass." Zander shrugged, and the two walked hand in hand in the direction of the bagel shop.
Zander could feel the snow crunch beneath his feet as he lead Haleigh toward his apartment. The night air was brisk, yet Zander had never felt more comfortable. His fingers intertwined with Haleigh's. It was like this simple act was warming his entire body. He wasn't able to feel the cold.
Haleigh tried to hide the shiver that ran through her whole body. She had just been rolling around in the snow as she and Alyssa attacked each other. Her whole body was wet, and frozen.
"You cold?" Zander stopped walking briefly as Haleigh shook beside him. It was only then that he realized she was soaking wet. Zander slipped out of his warm leather jacket, letting the cold Vermont air kiss his skin. He draped his jacket around Haleigh's shoulders, attempting to warm her.
Kyle and Spencer sat in their normal spots on the sofa. Tonight they were watching some show about Zombies instead of playing their usual video game. Kyle had the long bong rested in between his legs. His lips met the mouthpiece of the bong as he flicked his lighter, lighting the bowl. Smoke filtered into the stem, through the dirty, used water, and up the chamber. He swiftly pulled the stem and inhaled deeply, the smoke filled his lungs.
"Seriously?" Zander sighed as he noticed the state of the living room, and the activities his roommates were partaking in.
"Want a hit?" Kyle's eyes were bloodshot and half closed, his words were slurred. He picked up the bong and offered it to Zander as he slowly exhaled, smoked filled the living room. An unmistakable, skunky smell wafted into Zander and Haleigh's nostrils.
"No." Zander scoffed, rolling his eyes as he lead Haleigh toward his bedroom.
"I thought they broke up?" Spencer's voice sounded over the TV show.
"Dunno." Kyle shrugged and Zander slammed the door of his bedroom shut behind him, drowning out the voices of his roommates.
"Sorry about them." Zander apologized for his roommates behavior.
"Its f-fine." Haleigh shivered. "My brother smoked a lot in high school." Haleigh had tried it once with Shane, but never really understood the hype. Though, it never really bothered her if people around her smoked.
Zander hurried over to his bureau when he noticed Haleigh shiver again. He pulled out a long sleeved shirt that he normally wore under his clothes on the rare occasion he went snowboarding, and a pair of dark grey sweatpants that he hadn't worn since his wrestling days in high school.
"Here, Hales, change out of those wet clothes." He offered her the dry clothes, and then slipped out of his combat boots, placing them in their normal spot next to his desk.
Haleigh's confidence was still heightened. She began to slip out of her wet clothes in the middle of Zander's bedroom. The snow had made her jeans heavy and they hit the wood floor with a thud. Zander looked up from what he was doing, he gazed at Haleigh as she slipped her sweater, and then bra over her head. She stood almost bare naked in the middle of Zander's room. The only article of clothing left was her panties, which had managed to stay somewhat dry during the fight.
Zander walked slowly toward Haleigh, he reveled in the sight of Haleigh's naked body.
"Why do you do this to me?" Zander ran his hand up the bare skin of Haleigh's side, causing her to shiver. Her skin was cold to the touch, and he wanted nothing more than to help warm her up.
She smiled playfully. She knew exactly what she was doing. Zander leaned down as he placed gentle kisses on Haleigh's neck. She shivered again, and Zander forced himself to pull away.
"You're freezing. Get your butt dressed." Zander demanded with a smirk.
"Yessir." Haleigh giggled, she pulled Zander's long sleeve shirt over her head, and slid the oversized sweats onto her legs. They were much too big for her, so she rolled the waist band in an attempt to help them fit her slender waist. As soon as she was dressed she hopped under the covers of Zander's warm bed.
Zander found himself smirking again. He flicked off the light as he removed his jeans and t-shirt. His boxers, which was what he normally slept in remained. He too found himself under the covers of his bed. Haleigh wrapped herself around Zander as he snaked his left arm around her waist.
Haleigh loved everything she was feeling right now. The warmth of Zander's comforter was cozy and inviting, and she was unmistakably happy that Zander's arms were wrapped tightly around her, as if he was determined to never let go again.
The night passed slowly, Haleigh and Zander stayed up for hours, talking and kissing, and enjoying each other's company. Soon exhaustion hit both of them, Haleigh lay with her head on Zander's chest as he traced tiny circles on the small of her back. Haleigh watched the light from a street lamp dance in the silk curtains of Zander's bedroom window, before her eyes grew heavy, and she drifted off to sleep.
"I love you Hales." Zander whispered before he too let the sleep take over his body.
