Chapter Thirty-Nine: Go to Sleep!

The rest of the party went surprisingly well. Zander had returned to his spot, bass strapped around his chest and finished out the set with The Wailing Donkeyz. By one o'clock the party had started to dwindle down. A couple of stragglers stayed as they waited for the Donkeyz to play their last song. Haleigh sat on the arm of the sofa as she talked to Toby, sneaking glances of Zander every once in a while. She would blush and grin when the two locked eyes, and Zander would smile back as he thought about kissing her again.

This was the longest Haleigh had ever stayed at a Kappa Sigma party, but she didn't mind. She was having fun catching up with Toby as their boyfriends jammed out, one sang while they other one picked his bass.

Haleigh had noticed that she hadn't seen Sam since before Zander had sang to her. She wondered where her roommate could be, but figured she was probably off sucking face with Charles. This theory changed, however when she spotted Charles off in the corner talking to one of his fraternity brothers. Sam was nowhere to be seen. Haleigh contemplated texting her friend, but decided against it as she assumed Sam had called it an early night, and was probably perfectly fine in her dorm room bed, or working on an article for the next week's school paper.

By one-thirty the Kappa party had ended. Zander and the rest of his band packed up their equipment, and the only remaining students in the house were Haleigh and the members of the Kappa Sigma fraternity.

Zander shut the clasps on his bass case, picked it up by its handle and made his way over toward Haleigh. She had been waiting patiently as she talked with Toby who had  wandered off not too long ago to talk with Jackson. They stood in the corner of the room making out, and Haleigh couldn't help but smile at her friend. He was so completely in love, and happy, this made Haleigh happy.

"You ready?" Zander smiled down at his girlfriend, who stood from the arm of the sofa, wrapping her arms around Zander in a quick hug.

"See you guys later." Zander hollered to his bandmates. Dylan cussed as he struggled to pack up his drums. Alvin laughed as Dylan snapped one of his drumsticks in half out of frustration. Dylan then chucked half of the stick at Alvin's head, which only caused Alvin to laugh harder, earning him the other half of the drumstick.

"Idiot." Dylan muttered under his breath.

"Moron." Alvin muttered back.

Haleigh snickered at the two band members as they bickered back and forth as if they were a married couple.

"Are they always like that?" She asked Zander as the couple walked hand in hand toward the front door of the Kappa Sigma house.

"Always." Zander rolled his eyes and chuckled slightly to himself.

***

The apartment was quiet. Zander placed his bass against the far wall of the living room near the overly stocked bookcase. Pizza boxes scattered the living room floor as well as a few soda cans.

"I swear to god, I'm the only one who cares to clean up after himself around here." Zander was growing tired of always having to clean up after his roommates. They were such slobs.

"Come on." Haleigh smiled at Zander as she grabbed his hand with both of hers, and lead Zander into his bedroom. The room was dark except the light from the street lamp that danced playfully in the wrinkles of the silk curtains. Haleigh slipped out of her leather jacket gracefully, placing it on the back of Zander's desk chair, then leaned up and kissed Zander on his cheek.

"You were amazing tonight." Haleigh smiled as Zander too removed his leather jacket placing it on a coat hanger, and back into its place in his closet. Next he removed his combat boots and placed them neatly by the side of his desk. Zander was obviously someone who cared about cleanliness. Which was somewhat surprising to Haleigh. She would have thought with his leather jacket, combat boots, and 'bad-boy' attitude that he would have been the complete opposite.

"Thanks." Zander let out a sigh of relief. He had removed his jeans now and was only in his t-shirt and boxers. He slipped into the comfort of his bed, Haleigh followed. She slipped comfortably into his left arm, resting her head on his chest. "I was so nervous. We rehearsed that all week."

"I didn't know you could even sing." Haleigh nearly whispered as the sleep threatened to take over her body. She wanted to stay up all night and talk with Zander. It seemed like it had been forever since their last serious conversation, and she was craving that.

"My mom put me in music lessons when I was about four." Zander explained as he traced little circles on Haleigh's lower back. "But I was always more interested in the bass than vocal lessons. My mom hated it."

"Hmm..." Haleigh was trying desperately to fight the sleep as she listened to Zander talk about his life. Zander chuckled to himself as Haleigh's eyes fluttered closed, and she drifted off into a deep sleep. Something she hadn't gotten in weeks.

Sleep, however, didn't come quite so easily for Zander. He closed his eyes and tried his best to shut his mind down, but nothing he did was seeming to work. He was so happy their gig had gone as planned. He was happy Haleigh was cuddled up in his arms right now, and he wanted to hold her all night. There was just one thing that was bothering him, however, Alyssa. He thought about how to get her to move on. He couldn't be worried about Alyssa coming in and messing everything up with Haleigh again. Maybe he could set her up with Dylan? Or was she more Alvin's type?

Zander's mind quickly changed to a new topic. Zander worried about the living room and the mess of pizza boxes and soda cans. He worried about the electric bill, and internet bill, and wondered if Spencer, his roommate, had gone to the offices earlier in the day to pay the bills like Zander had asked him to. He better not have spent the money on weed again like he did six months ago. Zander had only trusted him with this month's bills because he had been running late for his last band rehearsal before the gig.

Zander worried about his mother. He hoped she was doing well. He hadn't gotten around to calling her after Thanksgiving, he had just been so busy. Zander worried about his older sister, Amy, who was off somewhere with her deadbeat boyfriend. He hoped she was safe, and out of harm's way...

Zander worried about his two younger brothers, Ethan and Evan who were twins. They were both off at college in Boston, and he was hoping they were focusing on their studies. Someone had to graduate from college and make their mom proud.

Zander thought about his father. He had left the family to fend for themselves when Zander had been only four years old. The twins had been about a year old. Amy was six. Zander tried hard to remember what his father looked like, but his memory disappointed him. He tried to remember anything about his father, what he was like, what car he drove, something he wore every day like a baseball hat or watch? Zander just couldn't remember. But then, why was he even thinking about these things?

Go to sleep! Zander internally yelled at himself. Why wouldn't his brain shut off?

It was no use, Zander carefully freed his arm from around Haleigh. She stirred only slightly, then rolled over and continued to sleep. Zander got up from his bed, and made his way into the living room to clean.
