Chapter Thirty-Three: I Love You

Zander left the party early. He hated letting his band members down, but he just couldn't be there anymore. His mind was racing, his blood boiled with anger. He hated that he had kissed Alyssa. He was just so mad at what Haleigh had said earlier in her dorm room. He had expected her to say that they were a couple just so Charles would change the topic, yes he didn't want to put labels on their relationship. They were just starting to get to know each other, but when Haleigh had said they weren't a couple Zander's stomach had dropped. His heart sank, and his breath hitched in his throat. She was basically saying that she didn't care if he hooked up with another girl. Right?

Zander's phone buzzed in his pocket.

Alyssa: Where'd you go? Come over.

Zander rolled his eyes. He knew Haleigh was sitting on the front steps of the Kappa Sigma house when he had approached Alyssa. He knew kissing her would piss Haleigh off, and that's just what he wanted to do. He wanted to make Haleigh as mad as she had made him. He never expected the response he had gotten from her though. It was a side of Haleigh that Zander had never seen before. He was sure his chest was beginning to bruise from how hard she had shoved him. She was strong, that was for sure. He wished he could take it all back.

The late November breeze blew hard against Zander's face as he walked through campus. He wasn't really sure where he was going, and he let his mind wander as he walked. He had been so excited to see Haleigh when she had gotten home from her Thanksgiving break. She had only been home for about five hours. How did things go south so quickly? He wanted to go to her, to hold her in his arms and make up for the pain that he had caused tonight.

Before Zander knew it he was standing in front of Haleigh's dorm building. The red bricks of the structure were illuminated by one of the porch lights. Zander sighed deeply as he took a seat on the concrete steps. He fucked up. How was he going to fix this? Zander pulled his phone from his pocket.

Zander: Come talk to me?

Haleigh: Fuck off.

Zander: I fucked up. I'm sorry...

Haleigh: Lose my number, jackass.

"Shit." Zander sighed as he ran his fingers through his dark brown hair. He could feel himself growing more and more anxious, he felt as if his whole world was crumbling beneath him.

Zander: I'm outside your building, please come talk to me.

He wasn't sure what he was going to say to her. He just needed to see her, and the words would come easily right?

Moments passed as Zander waited in silence. He wasn't sure if she was going to come out or not, but he waited, hoping that she would. Zander jumped up from where he was sitting as the front door of the dorm building swung open, hitting hard against the brick wall. He spun around to see Haleigh standing at the top of the steps. Anger radiated off of her presence.

***

Zander: I'm outside your building, please come talk to me.

Haleigh was utterly and completely pissed. She hopped out of her bed, threw on her jacket and slipped into her chucks before she marched down the stairs toward the front door of the building. She could see the back of Zander through the glass of the front door, as he sat on the concrete steps. The confidence she was feeling now was new to her. It wasn't a happy confidence, but instead she felt as if she could take on the world right now. Haleigh threw the door of her dorm building open as hard as she could, ignoring the loud crash it made as it collided with the brick wall of the building. She watched as Zander jumped to his feet, then turned to face her.

"Haleigh..." Zander's soft voice only irritated Haleigh even more.

"Don't." She warned. "Don't talk, just listen." She sighed deeply as her heart thumped hard against her chest. "You are the most disgusting human being I have ever had the misfortune of meeting. You lead me on. You made me fall for you. I told you my deepest secrets, and allowed you into my life." Haleigh paused as she looked coldly into his perfect golden brown eyes. "I trusted you." Haleigh ignored the single tear that trickled down her cheek as she walked slowly down the stairs toward Zander.

"I'm sorry." Zander's gaze fell to a turquoise pebble that occupied the ground in front of him.

"You're sorry?" Haleigh spat at him. She had come face to face with Zander and her anger was getting the better of her, she pushed him for the third time that night, though not as hard as she had earlier. He took a step backwards, unfazed by the push. "If you didn't want to be with me you could have just said something." She sighed as she turned to walk back to her dorm. Haleigh's anger had vanished in almost an instant. She was no longer feeling the urge to punch Zander in the face, instead she felt defeated. She felt so stupid for letting this guy into her life. She just wanted to curl up under the covers of her uncomfortable dorm room bed and hide from the world. She turned back around as Zander began to speak.

"I don't know why I did it..." Haleigh took a seat on the concrete steps as Zander spoke to her. "I was just so mad, I wanted to piss you off."

"Why? What did I do to you?" Haleigh's gaze found the turquoise pebble Zander had been staring at.

"I don't know. I was mad you told Charles we weren't together."

"Are you really that vengeful? You're the one who said we shouldn't put labels on us. You kissed someone else, Alyssa of all people, because you were mad at me? Do you understand how insane that is?" Haleigh was hurt. She stood from where she was sitting on the steps, and turned toward the door.

"I love you..." Zander said in almost a whisper. It took all that Haleigh had to ignore this statement as she disappeared inside her dorm building.
