Chapter Twenty-Five: Betrayal
"Can you send that to me?" Haleigh broke the silence. Sam nodded silently and clicked a few buttons on her phone. Soon Haleigh's phone vibrated in her pocket indicating she had received the picture from Sam.
"What are you going to do?" Sam wondered, she had a concerned look on her face as her roommate stood from her bed and turned to leave. "Haleigh, wait." Haleigh left the room without saying a word.
The sun had completely set on campus when Haleigh had made it back outside. Snow had started to fall from the November sky, a thin layer of white flakes covered the ground below Haleigh's sneakers. She walked slowly in the direction of Zander's apartment. Although it was cold out, and snow was falling, Haleigh could feel beads of sweat forming on her forehead. Her face was still hot, and her eyes scratched, threatening to release tears. She suppressed those tears as she continued to walk toward Zander's apartment.
Haleigh knocked lightly on the door of the apartment. Adrenaline had started to run through her veins. She could hear footsteps inside as someone rushed to answer the door. Soon the door was swung open, and Zander stood on the other side, he was shirtless and wearing only a pair of basketball shorts. Haleigh's heart fluttered in her chest. Why did he have to go and ruin everything? She should have went to that party last night. Or she should have begged him to stay with her. Haleigh's eyes glanced over his toned body as she pushed her way passed him. She didn't bother removing her shoes as she made her way into Zander's bedroom. She grabbed her bag and started packing her belongings.
"What are you doing?" Zander's eyebrows furrowed as he watched Haleigh make her way around the room, grabbing different articles of clothing and shoving them into her bag. Lastly she ripped her phone charger out of the wall and shoved it in the bag. "Did I do something?" He wondered, cluelessly. Haleigh remained silent, but turned to look Zander in the eye as she slung her bag over her shoulder. "What did I do?" This question only brought more rage to Haleigh. She pulled her phone from her pocket, unlocked it and pulled up the picture of Zander kissing Alyssa.
"I don't know, you tell me." She spat as she thrust the phone at Zander. His eyebrows furrowed as he glanced at the picture. A look of guilt washed over his face as he stared at the screen of Haleigh's phone.
"How did you get this?" A tinge of anger lingered in his voice.
"Oh that is so not the point right now." Haleigh locked her phone and shoved it back in her pocket as she turned to leave.
"Hales, wait." Haleigh flinched at Zander's nickname for her. Zander caught Haleigh's arm in an attempt to explain himself. It was no use. Haleigh jerked her arm out of Zander's grasp.
"Don't touch me." She growled, her new found confidence would surely fade soon. She had to get out of there.
"Haleigh!" Zander attempted once more, but she was already out the door of the apartment. The tears finally broke through and they stained her cheeks. Haleigh pulled the hood of her sweatshirt over her head, and walked back toward her dorm in the dark.
Sleep didn't come easily for Haleigh that night. Zander was blowing up her phone with texts and phone calls that she continuously ignored. Sam was fast asleep in the bed next to her, and the moon cast shadows through the window of the dorm room. She desperately wanted to text Zander back. She wanted him to explain himself, and she wanted to be in his arms...
The next day Haleigh attempted to work on her homework. She didn't really have a lot to do, just an essay on a famous art heist for her Art History class and a bunch of geometry problems. She was having a difficult time staying focused. With the lack of sleep and the constant texts she was getting from Zander, it was impossible to write about the theft of the Mona Lisa. She glanced at her phone just as a text from Zander came through.
Zander: Hales, please let me explain...
Haleigh rolled her eyes, his actions from Friday night had no explanation. She still couldn't fully understand how Zander could have gone from her knight in shining armor to a complete douchebag in only a couple of hours, then return back to his apartment and cuddle with Haleigh as if nothing had happened. This thought was making her nauseous. How had Haleigh seen passed the fact this guy was a complete jerk? She was mad at herself for revealing so many secrets about herself to Zander. She was mad at herself for having sex with someone she had only known for two weeks. But she was mostly mad at the fact that she had let her guard down with Zander, and there was no denying that she had fallen for him. The image of his lips on Alyssa's was permanently etched into Haleigh's brain. Haleigh unlocked her phone for the first time since last night. She responded to Zander.
Haleigh: STOP TEXTING ME
Haleigh's world felt like it was falling apart around her. She desperately just wanted to go home, to have Sky greet her in the dooryard... A tear escaped her eyes as she realized Sky would never be able to comfort Haleigh again. Frustration took over Haleigh's body as she locked her phone and chucked it across the dorm room. It collided with the cement wall causing Sam to jump, startled. Not wanting to push the situation any further, Sam focused her attention back on whatever homework she was working on.
Sorry for the short chapter, another one will be up sometime this afternoon. Don't forget to vote and leave me a comment. What do you all think about Zander and Haleigh's fight? Is Haleigh wrong to be mad at Zander because they aren't technically 'together' or is Zander in the wrong? Let me know what you think!
