The woman looked at her with anger." You don't deserve his help, you ungrateful little-"
Gracie glared up at her," what are you talking about?" She asked her. Then her words replayed in her head.
Homeless.
Homeless.
"Do you think we're here because he's helping out a helpless person? A homeless person?" This time her tone changed.
"Grace..." Cole's tone changed as well when he sensed hers taking a darker turn. Her eyes met his and he willed her to not continue with her threat." You're not well." He grabbed her hand, rubbing circles on the inside of her wrist.
In the books back home, he's read that touch ones lifemate calms them down in their time of depression, anger or sorrow. So he figured giving it a try and right now, it seemed to be working, if only by a little bit.
He then turned to the waitress," if you must know, we're detectives." He said, pulling out his badge. Gracie's eyes flashed and she looked at him in question, but he brushed it off. For now.
She felt something drip onto her unclutched hand, and she looked down.
"Go."
She looked up at Cole who nodded towards the bathroom, and she quickly stood up, hurrying to the bathroom. Inside, she reached the mirror and wiped her nose with the back of her hand. More blood dripped from her nose, and she winced. She washed her face before leaving the room.
Cole watched her as she sat down, taking a sip from her coffee that arrived not too long ago.
"What is our next task?" She asked him, placing her cup down.
Pulling out the folder from earlier, he handed it to her.
"There's a group of shifters who are hiding some kind of weapon. I don't know what it is, but it dangerous to lower levels of shifters like fledglings or those bitten. They want you and me to check out one of the buildings listed in that file, and report back to them as soon as possible." He summarised for her as she scanned the documents.
"So I'm guessing this is supposed to be an easier task than the first one?" She asked, looking at him from over the file.
He shrugged," I suppose so. After all, you did lose a lot of blood before." He pointed out, tapping his fingers on the table top. She nodded and closed the file, passing it back to him." Do you think you can find that building once we leave?" He asked softly, looking into her eyes.
"I might have an idea of where that building could be. Could I borrow you phone please?" She asked him and he pulled it, slipping it into her hands. She pulled out her phone as well and captured a picture of the building on the file, while typing out an address on his phone.
"There we go." She passed it back to him after memorizing the address.
"It isn't that far out from New Orleans, so we'll be able to reach there by sunset." She told him and they finished their drinks.
They stood up, leaving a money on the table before walking out.
"Gracie, what did you do to free me?" He asked finally as they walked down a busy street.
She stopped." What do you mean?" He paused, looking at her. His red eyes trained on her held her in place." I'm talking about what happened back at the tunnels." Her eyes widened slightly, but she kept it from showing on her face." I have no idea what you're on about." She said, continuing to walk on. But he grabbed her arm, stopping her." I know you did something to break that spell."
