The next morning, June woke up from a banging noise and a throbbing headache. As she raised her head, it felt like her skull was splitting open. She groaned loudly as she let herself drop on the bed again.
There were a few footsteps on the floor, then the bed rocked a little bit as someone sat down on it—June didn't know who, and she didn't turn to look.
“I'm sorry,” Terrance said in a whispering voice, so he wouldn't hurt her head. “I didn't mean to bang the door. Did you sleep well? How is your head?”
Her eyes shut to keep out the burning light, she pressed her head in the pillow. She didn't want to see him right now. She felt awful, and every single sound hurt her head—not to mention she was already feeling sick. However, even now, she could hear him grin.
One of his hands softly touched her shoulder, her neck. He carefully lifted up her head, so he could look her in the face. She squirmed to get out of the light that hurt her eyes, but she didn't have the strength to fight. She felt how he put something over her head, around her neck. He let go of her again, and her head fell down on the pillow.
“Maya and I did a bit of magic,” he said. “This ought to help against that hangover of yours. Do you even remember a thing of last night? You drank so much...”
She did not answer, but tried to fight the headache. Terrance was silent, for which she was grateful; any soft sound hurt her head. She wanted to remember what happened last night, but her memory seemed awfully empty; she knew what happened up to a point, but after so many drinks of whatever, it just became a haze...
Slowly, the nausea lessened and the headache did as well, until June managed to lift her head up without a flash of pain going through her brain. She opened her eyes.
Terrance was sitting on the bed, smiling at her.
“See, I told you it would work.”
“Y-Yes, but...” She looked down, to see what it was that he had hung around her neck; a simple iron locket on a chain. The surface was smooth and reflected her face as she examined it. “What is this?”
“Don't open it,” he said before anything else. “There are two mirrors in it and a bit of blood and a whole lot of magical energy that will wash over you when it opens, so don't do it. That's rule number one, okay?”
“O-Okay.” She let the thing drop out of her fingers. It felt cold against the skin of her chest.
“Good, I don't want any accidents. That's always the number one concern of any alchemist when dealing with large amounts of magic... The magic comes from Maya, if you're wondering; it's her blood that's in the locket, caught between two mirrors. The mirrors reflect the magic energy, so little is lost, and an imprint is left behind in the negative space—the place behind the mirror. So just outside the locket, where you are.” He smiled as he glanced at his handiwork. “Essentially, this thing is a lazy man’s source of magic energy. It's not much that is created in the mirror, but it is enough to sustain a strong spell for an undetermined amount of time.”
