As June entered the meeting room, followed by Blake, the alphas immediately fell silent and turned to face her. Even Nikolai, who had been in the middle of some kind of rant, stopped as soon as he spotted her.
“Miss Vixen,” he growled.
“Nikolai,” she answered simply without flinching. “I am here to see how your plans are coming along. What were you discussing?”
One of the other three alphas, the one that had come to her room this morning, fiddled with his hands. “Important business; the Cathedral and it's priests.”
“What about them?”
“We were... trying to figure out where they get their information from.”
"You suspect there is a spy in the pack,” June said, earning herself a stunned look from Blake and surprised faces of the alphas. “You don't know who it is, but someone is passing on valuable information to the Cathedral. About the werewolves, and about the prophecy.”
“You know of it?”
“I've gathered enough of it, I know what I'm talking about,” she said. “What I am wondering though, is how you have yet to be able to identify this traitor.”
“We—eh... I...”
“It cannot be that hard, can it? The pack is not very large, it is not too much trouble to keep everyone under surveillance, is it?”
The man hesitated and ran his fingers through his graying hair. He sighed. “We tried that, we even made sure no one left the headquarters for a time—that didn't stop the spy either. He must be some cunning son of a bitch to evade us for so long.”
“And nobody is above suspicion?” June asked, glancing at Nikolai.
He growled. “No. Everybody in this place is investigated, but nothing yielded any results. Every bit of information we had still made its way to the Cathedral somehow.”
“Every bit of information?” Blake noted. “That must mean it's someone high up the food chain. Flunkies don't get to know all that much.”
Nikolai turned to him, clenching his fingers into fists, but June stopped him. “Blake is my personal assistant,” she said quickly. “He is here on my invitation and any attack on him is an attack on me. And trust me if I tell you... the last thing any of you souls wish to do in your miserable lives is attack the Immortal Fox.” She concentrated and quickly jerked up her hand, blue and silver sparks shooting out of her palm. It was a magic trick, the easiest one Maya could teach her; nothing more than flashes of light, created when the magic energy left the palm of her hand. But the effects of this child's trick were visible in the eyes of Nikolai—and all the other alphas as well. Two of them quickly moved in between Nikolai and her.
