Chapter 26 Hide and Seek:
Recap:
Sabrina embarrassed Elena in front of the whole school mentioning that she lives with Shane now and how heroic it is of Shane to give her a place to stay.
He opens the door for me and I walk in to see Sabrina waiting by the wall. She starts walking over.
“You messed with the wrong person! You started this game but I’m gonna end it.” She whispered in my ear and continued walking over to Shane.
“Oh Shane aren’t you the best. Helping an orphan girl, you gave her your cottage that’s the sweetest thing ever.” Sabrina said loudly so everyone in the hall could hear.
People started walking over and told Shane what a hero he is for helping me. I felt my eyes starting to burn and turned to walk away.
I can’t believe he looks like the good guy! He tried to throw me out! He actually got my stuff and threw it out the house and he’s looking like the good guy! He looks like my hero! He saved Ms. Orphan girl from freezing and starving to death! I felt the hot tears touch my face. Why does he always look good and why am I the reason? I hate Sabrina! I should’ve known she would pull such a move. I can’t believe I’m letting her get to me.
-------
Shane did warn me about Sabrina pulling something stupid like that but I was stubborn and didn’t listen to his warning. Even after that he took it upon himself to find me and make me feel better and take responsibility of me when he doesn’t have to. He also came all the way here with a really thoughtful present for me and said sorry yet I still didn’t have anything to say to him. I have to say thank you, he was trying to warn me yet I didn’t listen to him.
I walk into the main house and start walking around looking for Shane. I hear a noise coming from upstairs so I head up there. There was an open door so I walk through to find out that it was a gym. Damn, I didn’t know they had a gym at home I probably would have come up here to work out. Yeah, no I wouldn’t have. I saw Shane on one of the machines shirtless. I know I shouldn’t have but I couldn’t help but check him out and damn what a sight that was. I wasn’t looking where I was going and ended up running into one of the machines causing a loud noise.
“Who’s there?” Shane asked looking in the spot where I was once standing. Honestly, I had no idea I could move that fast. He started getting closer to the spot I was hiding in, from the corner of my eye I saw him turn around so I made a run for it. Why was I running?
Before I could come up with an answer for that I ran again when I saw him approaching. Thank goodness I was good at hide and seek when I was a kid or I would have been caught by now. When I started to move from my spot again I felt a hand on my wrist that started pulling me to the center of the gym. I turned to leave but Shane pulled me back to him. He lifted something in his hand and I looked to see it was the necklace I was wearing that he gave me. Instantly my hand went to my neck, I had no idea that fell off in the whole hide and seek thing.
Shane walked behind me, moved all my hair to one side and brought the necklace in front of me. He slowly put it on, touching my neck in the process. We stood there for a second too long and that’s when I turned to leave.
“Elena, stop,” Shane said. Obviously I didn’t listen and started walking forward, that’s when Shane stepped in front of me.
“You didn’t tell me why came here,” Shane said.
“Oh, um well, I came here to say thanks for what you did for me oh and obviously for the necklace, its perfect.”
“You don’t need to thank me. Look we might not get along, but if someone is rude to you that isn’t me, I won’t be able to tolerate it, I’ll stand up for you, understand?”
With those words Shane turned to leave, while I stood there too shock to move.
I ended up going back to my house not seeing Shane on the way out. Should I have said something back to him? Like what, thanks? Would that have sounded a bit strange, I mean it’s not like he even gave me a chance to say something to him. But, what he said was unexpected. He basically just told me he cares about me, right? I always thought that he hated me and that we could never stand in the same room without hurting the other. Maybe, things are changing between us.
Dear Diary,
I have a serious problem. I think that Shane and I are riding on the road to friendship or something. I just know that I can’t call him my enemy anymore. Who knew Shane would care about me enough to yell at his friend. What he said to me sparked something inside me. Would he really stand up for me when someone treats me rudely? I feel like Shane is slowly making a place for himself in my life. I thought that Shane was the worst person in the world and I couldn’t wait to get accepted into college and leave him behind. But now for some reason, I don’t feel like going to college so soon anymore. I actually want to stay with Shane for a little longer. Gosh, he’s so bipolar, one second he’s the one making my life terrible and the next he’s apologizing and putting a smile on my face. He’s making my brain hurt.
