The Summer in Cadberry
"So here we are, guys! My home!"
Jun said in a cheerful tone as the camper van finally slowed down.
"The road was muddy, then rocky, and then dry. I hope my wheels didn't totally wreck its tires."
Marco looked worried as he glanced at the tires.
Lubak-lubak ang mga daan papuntang probinsiya. Every few meters, the van would bounce hard enough to make everyone inside jump from their seats.
"Did you bring spare tires, Marc?"
Marco shook his head.
Hindi siya nakapagdala ng extra.
"Hopefully, maging maayos ang biyahe."
"Okay, let's go inside."
Jun invited them to their ancestral house.
Kristee stepped out of the van and immediately looked around.
"The place is so agricultural, Jun. Parang hindi ko kakayanin tumira ng two weeks dito."
She took off her sunglasses and immediately pulled out her phone, checking for a signal.
She raised it above her head.
Nothing.
She walked a few steps.
Still nothing.
She moved closer to the van.
One bar.
Then it disappeared.
"Seriously?"
Floyd laughed.
"Welcome to Cadberry."
For two years, Jun hadn't visited their ancestral home with his family and relatives because they were all busy, and some were residing abroad.
Only the caretaker managed the house maintenance.
"What if we run out of gas, bro?"
Marco looked concerned.
"Don't worry. We have our own gas station. Nasa bayan."
"You gotta be kidding me, Jun! You have a gas station but you don't have internet here?"
Kristee jumped into the conversation.
"Oo nga, Mayor's son."
Floyd added.
Everyone laughed.
Everyone except Kristee, who was still holding her phone in the air, hoping for another bar of signal.
"Okay, okay. Let's forget about the internet for a while."
Jun grinned.
"You'll survive."
"I don't know about that."
Kristee rolled her eyes.
Everyone stepped out of the vehicle after Marco parked it in their garage.
They stopped for a moment.
They were amazed by the structure in front of them.
It was a two-storey white mansion belonging to Jun's family.
It looked like a huge cottage made of strong mahogany wood.
The Zamora's old white mansion, as people called it, had been built there for about a hundred years.
