"Why did you not invite her? What's her name again?" Kristee whispered to Rainier.

Her fingers lightly touched his arm, almost casually—but her eyes were anything but casual.

"Alexine..." Marco and Floyd answered at the same time.

"Yeah. Alexine." Kristee rolled her eyes. "I'm so fed up with that name since yesterday."

She leaned closer, her voice dropping into a teasing whisper.

"Is she prettier than me? Huh?"

The boys exchanged glances.

Jun could not help but smile at Kristee's behavior.

He knew exactly where her sudden insecurity was coming from.

Alexine had always been special to him. She was his first love, although he had never really allowed himself to call it that. He had never made a move because he respected her—and the relationship between their families. More importantly, he valued their friendship.

Lovers could break up.

Friendships, if protected carefully, could last a lifetime.

That had always been Jun's mindset.

And if anyone asked him about Alexine's beauty, Jun knew he was biased.

He had grown up watching her become the girl she was.

Alexine didn't need expensive clothes to stand out. She didn't need a salon appointment, designer perfume, or layers of makeup. Her beauty was effortless—the kind that didn't seem to know it was beautiful.

Her long, shiny black hair fell naturally over her shoulders. Her bright eyes had a quiet warmth to them. She carried herself modestly, almost shyly, and somehow that made her even more captivating.

She was simply Alexine.

And to Jun, that was enough.

"Kristee," Jun finally said, putting down his guitar, "I can't compare you to her. But you're beautiful as you are."

Kristee immediately turned toward him.

"Hindi kita tinatanong, Jun."

"Owwww..." Floyd and Marco exchanged amused looks.

Rainier quietly lifted his glass and took another shot of tequila.

The alcohol was beginning to warm his cheeks.

Or maybe it wasn't the tequila.

Maybe it was Alexine.

Even hearing her name could make his heart race.

"I need to know, Rainier."

Kristee turned toward him.

"Answer me."
