Family and Marriage  (Maki's Past)

A/n: It's a long chapter just warnin ya~ <3

"Makiiii~" Kirei sings, skipping through the trees below me. "I'm gonna find you!"

"Hmph," I sigh quietly, shifting on the tree branch where I'm sitting. "I need to go clean, can't we be done with this stupid game, sir?" I whisper.

He grins at me with his wide toothy smile, his golden hair shining in the sunlight. "Maki, it's fun," he smiles. "Just play with us for a bit okay? Mommy and daddy won't get mad at you for not working all the time, you're just a kid,"

I turn away from him and sigh. Geez, he's such a cute kid, how can I say no to him? "Fine. It's not like I can say no to a five year old anyways,"

"Now that's the spirit!" he laughs. My heart beats a little faster in that moment, but it's interrupted by a shout.

"Ha! Found you two!" Kirei yells.

"Aw shucks! Run Maki!" Yuki shouts.

He leaps down from the tree and lands on his feet, sprinting away from Kirei as she chases him. I stay where I am, questioning why I can never say no to him. Is it just because he's so cute? No, Kirei and Yui are adorable too, and I deny them snacks before dinner. Is it because he's the son of my master? No, he's just a kid after all, same as me. So why is it?

"Aren't you gonna play too Maki-sama?" someone interrupts. I turn to see Yui sitting on the tree behind me, braiding her dark hair into knots. I swing my legs back and forth and hop down from the branch, throwing my thoughts out of my head.

"I guess. How about you, Yui?"

"I'll come with you Maki-sama," she smiles. "But, could you help me down?"

"Sure," I reply, lifting her small body down from the tree. "Now let's go help Yuki!"

TIME SKIP

After Yuki, Kirei, and Yui finally get all their energy out, I walk them back to the house. Yuki falls onto the sofa and the sisters follow his example.

"Mama Nishiki, may I please have a glass of lemonade?" Yui asks, her small face pink from all the exercise.

Miss Nishiki laughs from the kitchen and walks over, handing a cup to her, filled to the brim with ice and lemonade. She sets down the pitcher on the table and pulls Yuki into a hug. "You guys sure did play outside a lot today,"

"Of course we did mommy! The sun's finally out! That yucky snow's gone!" Yuki beams. I giggle quietly at his excitement, pouring a glass for myself.

"Makino! Ask miss Nishiki before you go and pour yourself a drink like that!" one of the maids scolds from the kitchen.

"Oh!" I shout. "Sorry miss Nishiki," I bow, setting the cup down.

"Maki dear, it's fine!" she smiles. "There's no need to be so polite, we're all family here,"

Those words hit me hard, harder than I realized. I haven't had a real family since my parents disappeared, and left me to fend for myself. The Nishiki's found me on the street, and took me in as their own. Tears roll down my cheeks and a warm smile grows on my face.

"Thank you miss Nishiki,"

"Aw, don't cry Maki! Of course you're our family," Yuki and Yui say in synch.

"Mhm!" Kirei smiles. She hands me the cup of lemonade and I sip it proudly.

"It's perfect," I grin.

The rest of the night is spent laughing and playing games, until Yuki's father gets home from work. He kisses each of us goodnight, even me, and miss Nishiki lays us down in the twin beds that are set up in Yuki's room. The sisters get one, me and Yuki the other. I lie next to Yuki in his bed awkwardly, my face blushing from the fact that I'm sleeping next to a five year old boy. He rolls over and stares me in the face after a while, not being able to sleep.

"Nightmares?" I whisper.

"No, just wondering about something," he replies quietly.

"What is it? Maybe if I answer it, you can fall asleep."

He stares at me with his big blue orbs. "What is marriage?" I giggle and he huffs, throwing his arms up. "What? Why does everyone do that when I ask them?"

"I think it's because a cute a little kid like you wants to know about something only grown ups can do," I smile.

"You can only get married when you're grown up?"

"Mhm," I reply.

"But what is marriage Maki?"

"Um, I guess to explain it to you I'll make it simple, it's when two people who love each other very much, get together and declare their love for the whole world. They give each other rings too, like your mom and dad have. It symbolizes their bond,"

Yuki suddenly stands up, and grabs something silver from his drawer. When he comes back I realize it's a ring.

"If I love you," he smiles. "When we're "grown up," can I marry you, Maki?" My face flushes and I turn away from him, nearly crying at his innocence.

"M-maybe," I reply embarrassingly.

He grabs my hand and slips the ring on, grinning at my red face. "I love you Maki! When we're older, let's get married!"

After a few minutes Yuki lies back down, head in my lap, and falls asleep with a smile on his face. The red doesn't fade from my face as I shift and lie beside him, cuddling his small body. I think of how many emotions have hit me today, and how much they've made me smile.

"I'm so happy you found me, Nishiki's,"
