"Yeah, I think you're right. The line should be how I swear you looked right through me." Tim says scribbling on the paper between us. This isn't weird at all. The two of us working on a song kind of about the two of us. Completely normal really.
"I know, I'm always right." I say to him. "So are you going to record this one?" I ask him. We've basically finished it now and it's fantastic. It's going to be hit.
"Nah, it's to ballad-y." He says looking towards me. He's avoided making distinctive eye contact all night and after our discussion about no more awkwardness it's slightly off putting. "I'll probably sell the demo."
"Oh okay, well I'm proud of the song." I say picking up the paper. I haven't actually sung it get but I get this energy from the words that's like nothing else.
"You'll get equal writing credit." Tim says.
"No, it's fine. I don't need it."
I start singing the song through, quietly and with each word that I sing I love the song more and more. I finish it and see Tim starring at me. "What?" I ask.
"That was amazing." He says. Eyes wide open with this look of pure astonishment. "You need to sing this song." He asserts.
"No, I couldn't." I say knowing full well that it would just feed the media frenzy we've already sparked.
"Please faith." He plead. "Just sing the demo."
"I don't know Tim." I try but he's finally looking me in the eyes and I'm weak. "Fine, the demo only. And only if you sing the harmonies." I barter.
"Okay, let's go." He says getting up and going to the home studio. He hands me some headphones and puts me in the studio.
"Okay Faith." His keyboard comes over the speakers and I sing our lyrics.
"Can I do that again please?" I ask when I finish.
"No! Faith that was great." I hear him say. "Now come out so you can record me."
Within a few minutes he's in the studio and my recording is playing and he adds his own voice to the track. "Tim that was... Wow." I'm most for words. He's just so good.
"I mean it was nothing compared to you but I tried." He says coming out of the booth. We listen through the track and honestly it's perfect.
"Hell I'd put it exactly like that on my album." I say.
"Me too. It's great." He says starring into space.
"Can you give me a copy please?" I ask. And he puts it into my phone. "It's really late. I should head home." I say to him.
"Oh yeah it's pretty late." He agrees. "Let me walk you to your car."
"Oh you don't have to."
"Please Faith, I insist. You helped me finish this song." I sigh and give in. We ride the elevator in silence and as we walk through the parking garage Tim stops.
"When am I going to see you again?" He asks. I look at him. Right now there's at least 4 feet between us but there's so much more than that.
"I don't know Tim." I say honestly. I want to see him everyday, I want to wake up in his arms, I want to be with him. But I don't want to break both our hearts again. We're fire and ice. We can exist together.
"I don't want it to be another 4 years Faith." He says. His tone is soft like he's confessing a deep secret.
"Me neither. But Tim, we aren't good for each other." He winces at my words.
"We used to be friends Faith, remember." He says a hint of pain in his voice. He's right. We had coffee, we hung out. We were best friends.
"I need to go home." I say. We walk closer to my car and I get in and start it. He stays by the door. I roll the window down.
He gives me a weak smile. "Thank you for helping me. I miss you faith." He says.
"I always miss you Tim."
