The three of us had safely made it back to New York City. As soon as I saw the familiar scenery, I couldn't help but feel glad and happy to be back. Don't get me wrong, traveling had been an eye opening experience, but seeing the people I cared about and hearing how worried they had been about me brought back something in me that I hadn't felt in a while. I felt home.
Time passed quickly. Not a day went by where I didn't think about what happened on Costa Rica, but since I doubted we would ever find out who those men were, I tried my hardest to forget about them.
I gave everyone the souvenirs I bought and shared travel stories with them, but the constant feeling that something was missing gnawed at me with each passing day. Thor hadn't tried to contact me or anyone else on earth, for that matter, and the longer he stayed silent, the angrier I became.
After several weeks of being back, I decided to get my own apartment. Don't get me wrong, I loved having Bruce around, but traveling alone made me realize how much I enjoyed being by myself, and besides, I liked having responsibilities.
It was hard at first, readjusting to American culture after having spent so much time in the South, and even though I loved my own place, I still had trouble sleeping through the night. Hela's visions of what the world should look like plagued my mind after dark and I still often woke up in the middle of the night, drenched in sweat and shivering in fear.
SHIELD continued to push me to work for them, although I admitted I had no idea what I would do. I refused to join the Avengers, simply because I didn't believe I would be of any help in their team, but after weeks and weeks of all them trying to convince me to start training so I could at least get in top physical shape, I finally agreed.
Out of all professions in the world, I never thought about being an undercover specialist.
Every morning, I'd come into the SHIELD headquarters located in the Stark Tower, bearing a cup of steaming hot coffee and my gym bag, which held a towel, bottle of water, at least one piece of fruit and a clean shirt.
I was assigned to Steve to be my trainer and truthfully, I didn't mind one bit. We started off easy, first working on improving my muscle strength and longevity. We did boxing, weight training and cardio for nearly four hours each day and Steve ordered me to go on runs by myself on days where we wouldn't train.
I'd never much been a fan of physical activity, but seeing my body change in a positive way brought nothing but smiles to my face. I could feel myself get stronger after each passing session and I was sure Steve could see it too, because he showered me with compliments after each time we trained.
