I slowly woke up to the sound to pitter-patter on the window above the bed I was in. For a second, I was convinced I was back in the Sanctum, but when a flash of lightning illuminated the room I shared with Thor, I was immediately brought back to reality.
With a deep sigh, I ran a hand through my hair. I sat up straight and wiped the sweat off my brow; droplets that had been caused by the feverish nightmare I'd suffered just moments ago.
I still couldn't believe what me and Thor had done earlier that night, but I didn't regret it, even though for a moment I was scared the only reason why we had was because of the pain we both found ourselves in.
As the memories of my sleep-induced terror began to fade quickly, I gently placed my left hand on the bed beside me. I expected to feel a body there, breathing deeply and steadily along to the thunder outside, but my hand connected to the mattress instead of the man I'd fallen asleep with less than two hours ago.
My head shot towards where my hand was and my heart sank. Seeing what I felt confirmed my suspicion. The bed was empty. I listened carefully for any sign of him in the bathroom, but him being there wouldn't make any sense. After all, the lights were off.
I got up on my knees and pushed myself up to the window. The raindrops splashing against the glass partially obstructed my view, but something inside of me told me to keep looking towards the surrounding forest.
Lightning flashed across the sky, painting it white for a split second, before engulfing it in darkness again. The same thing happened twice, three times more and on the fourth strike, I finally saw it.
My breath fogged up the glass, so I had to quickly use the bed sheets to wipe away the condensation before pressing my nose up to the window. I could see the outline of a person, walking from the grass beneath the window towards the woods up ahead.
On the fifth strike, I saw it was Thor.
I didn't hesitate to jump out of bed. Without looking or thinking, I grabbed my nightgown and tossed it on over my head, nearly tripping over my own shoes in the process. The room was still dark after all and being clumsy was another hidden talent of mine.
Misery swelled in my chest as I hurried down the hallway and down the stairs taking two steps at a time and tears subconsciously welled up in the corners of my eyes when his face, held in the hand of Thanos while his brother was killed in front of him, flashed before my eyes.
The hairs on the back of my neck stood up and static rose between my fingers when I crossed the laboratory, passing by expensive equipment and vials containing colorful concoctions.
