Katelyn walked up to where Travis was standing. It was still morning and only a few hours had past sense their argument. She appreciated Aph's advice, but, was she really going to do this? Was Katelyn going to be the one to apologize? She didn't know much, but she did know that she missed being on good terms with Travis. She wasn't yet sure whether she was ready for a relationship with him, but she was ready to try talking. That much she was sure of.
"Travis.." Katelyn whispered as she walked up behind him, startling him. Even though she only whispered, it was still enough to scare him. Katelyn couldn't help but laugh.
"Katelyn," Travis gasped, "you scared me." "I'm sorry" Katelyn replied sarcastically. Of course she wasn't truly sorry, but it seemed like the polite thing to say. Then Katelyn thought of something: Why was she being polite? This was Travis. She's known him sense sophomore year when he was a freshman. They have been through so many adventures together. Katelyn wasn't sure why, but she wanted to be nice. Why do I want to be nice? Katelyn thought to herself.
"Do you need something?" Travis asked impatiently. All of a sudden a wave of disgust showered over Katelyn. "Sorry to bother you!" Katelyn said in a mocking tone. "I came over here to apologize!"
Travis was shocked. "Really?" He gasped. "Yes." Katelyn stated matter-of-a-factly. She continued, "I'm sorry for saying you need more commitment. I was wrong! I understand that I need to 'cool' my temper, but my temper makes me who I am so you are just going to have to deal with it!" Travis laughed. "I'm not done," Travis was still and Katelyn continued, "I would love to hang out with you if you would still have me..."
There was an all-to-awkward pause between the two of them. No one knew what to say. Katelyn was having trouble believing she just apologized to Travis of all people, and Travis was shocked Katelyn hadn't punched him yet.
"No." Travis stated. "What?" Katelyn asked. Disappointment flooded through her and she thought she felt a tear forming in her eye. She thought to herself, No? How can he just say no? I can't believe I screwed up this badly...
As Katelyn's eyes turned red, and pain filled her heart, she knew she made a mistake. "Oh my Irene..." she whispered to herself, and began to turn around.
Just then Travis grabbed her shoulder. "Calm down baby," Travis said to her; "I didn't mean no to hanging out, I meant, 'No, I'm suppose to apologize to you, no way you are apologizing to me'." A wave of relief washed over her, and she felt the sudden erg to punch him. So, she did.
"OW!" Travis yelled. "That hurt!" "Well that's what you deserve!" Katelyn replied.
"Look," Travis said, "I hope you don't think I was gonna let such good buns go to waste... what would Dante say?" "Travis!" Katelyn yelled, laughing. Now they were both laughing... "I'm just saying, Dante would not be happy with me!"
*****
Katelyn and Travis were now sitting at the bar. The sun was beginning to set and everyone who was fighting minutes before were now dancing with each other. Katelyn felt weird, but relaxed at the same time. Yes, Travis made her feel amazing, but she wasn't about to become a lovey-dovey-cotton-candy-kissy-face-hearts-everywhere-envy-a-disney-princess type of girlfriend. Sure, she wanted a happily ever after but in her own way.
She looked up at Travis, sipping his taco juice. Only Irene knows how he managed to get that on the menu, but he did. He seemed to be enjoying it too, which was an even bigger mystery to Katelyn. Even more mysterious then his eyes.
"Tra-" Katelyn started to speak but stopped herself. "Yes Katelyn?" Travis asked. Katelyn was embarrassed, she was already becoming the lost-in-my-maybe-boyfriend's-eyes type. That wasn't gonna happen. So she acted the only way she knew how. She punched him.
"Ow! Why do you keep doing that!" Travis yelled as he rubbed him arm. "Sorry!" Katelyn put her arms up in surrender. Travis whined, "You got me in the same spot as last time!" Katelyn was beginning to fill with a mixture of embarrassment, anger, and, maybe... love? She wasn't sure. However she knew that she needed to respond to Travis. "Sorry! It's just you started to act all cute sipping your revolting juice and I can't have that!"
Travis looked confused. "You can't have me looking cute? Really? Come on! That is a total deal breaker! If I can't be cute then you are doomed. Here me? Doo-Med." Katelyn couldn't help but yell again: "STOP BEING CUTE!" Now it was Travis's turn to surrender. "Sorry! I'll try not to, but NO promises."
They sat there for about half an hour just, talking. Like Travis wanted. There were no cheesy pick up lines, no violence, no name calling, and no worries. It was just them, being friends. Having a normal friend conversation. Then all of a sudden they felt this big gust if wind.
As Katelyn's hair rushed in the wind, Travis just looked at her. She was so beautiful. He couldn't help but feel all gooey inside. Maybe it was the juice, tacos and fruit don't mix well. However, maybe it wasn't. He leaned in for a kiss, but hesitated. The last thing he wanted was to get punched.
Although the risk of broken bones was still there, he decided it was worth the chance. He leaned closer, and kissed Katelyn. Katelyn jumped but didn't seem to fight it. They sat there, and all just seemed right. Then, she was gone.
Gone? Gone! Katelyn was gone! Literally five seconds ago they were kissing, now she's gone. Travis was worried. Really worried. He thought: Where did she go? What happened? How can she just disappear?
He called her name, but had no answer. He began to search the rest of the apartment, then he ran into Zane and Aaron, and for a split second he thought he heard... no... a whistle?
