A WEEK AFTER THE WEDDING ...

Latoya has been having a strong sense of foreboding immediately after the wedding. She sensed that she was being watched or that her family was being watched. But she had no proof whatsoever and eventually she let it go. It is now a week after the wedding and she strongly felt something was not right and that a massive cloud of darkness was over the house.

The cold July air found its way into the Rakwela's living room, sending chills down her spine. Even after heading back home daily from work, she felt uneasy but did not disclose it with her husband. They had come back from church hours earlier and Mompati had gone to rest in their bedroom. Latoya stood up and decided to take a walk outside. Lauretta and her husband will be back the next Saturday. Speaking of Lauretta, the child looked so grief stricken after the Reception party. Latoya's mind reeled back to the argument about Phillip. What had her son done? Why had Lauretta warned them sternly to let sleeping dog lie? is she enjoying her honeymoon? The silly child still calls everyday like a baby missing the mother.

She stood up and went to the bedroom. She opened the door carefully but only to find that Mompati was wide awake with his Samsung tablet in his hands.

"What are you doing? You said you wanted to rest." Latoya said sharply.

"Just browsing through our daughter's wedding photos." He replied with a sad smile.

"What is bothering you?" Latoya asked and sat next to him on the edge of the bed.

"When I remember the day she first arrived in this house; how numb she was, how tired she looked at such a tender age, it still breaks my heart to date. Looking at how much she has achieved and now has a home of her own just fills my heart with joy. Ironic huh?"

"I understand my dear. That child was so broken and now her biological parents are now trying to gain her trust. But Mompati, something isn't right. Since the wedding, I have been feeling rather strangely and that someone is watching us."

Mompati put the tablet down on the night stand and looked at his wife with concern.

"I don't have peace at heart and even now but I hope that I'm wrong." She stood up and sighed.

"I'm going out for a walk, I need some air and pray as I go. I feel really heavy inside of me. The heaviness just won't go away."

"I will join you. Give me a minute," Mompati said and went into the bathroom.

Latoya dropped her mobile phone and left the bedroom

He will find me outside.

Latoya walked out of their house and began strolling.

Lord, help me.

She stopped as she realized Mompati was not out of the house. But as she turned, a motorcycle rider came speeding through the neighbourhood and the aim seem to be Latoya.

In a flash, the rider stopped abruptly in front of Latoya, causing her to fall backwards. The neighbourhood was quiet that evening and there was not a single soul out. The rider stepped down, knelt beside her as if to help her and began to choke her. Latoya couldn't scream but prayed her husband comes out soon.

Just then Mompati came out and saw the awful scene before him. He shouted at the top of his voice thus surprising the assailant. The latter got up abruptly, got on the bike and drove away. Latoya coughed and struggled to breathe.

"Darling, are you okay? What happened?"

Latoya couldn't speak. A few neighbours came out after seeing the incident and rushed to the scene.

"Call an ambulance and the police immediately." A man shouted as he knelt down beside the wheezing Latoya.

"Stay with me Latoya! Stay with me."

Five hours later, Latoya slept on at Princess Marina hospital with her husband by her side. The police had come to take their statement and left but surely had no lead whatsoever. The motorcycle rider was masked making it impossible to identify him or her. Mompati felt terribly guilty for putting her in harm's way. If only he hadn't taken too long inside. He didn't call his sons as to not give them any stress but his mind kept going back to Latoya's words that someone was following her but why?

Five days later,

Latoya was given a week sick leave at work and she was grateful for the grace to hide indoors, away from the person that wants her dead. Mompati had left the house when a call came from work that one of her clients was in dire need to see her. Latoya didn't think twice and prepared for work and left the house.

On getting to the organization she worked for, indeed it was an appointment she had cancelled early in the week but her client was in no state to come later as it was a case of chronic depression. Immediately after the counselling period was over, she was told to go back home and rest and she thanked her colleagues and left. It was close to lunch hour when she headed home and got into a heavy traffic. As she waited in line with other vehicles, Mompati calls.

"Darling, how are you feeling?"

"I'm okay."

"Don't cook lunch okay, I will take you out."

She sighed deeply trying to figure out how she would explain she left the house.

She explained as carefully as she could but her husband got really upset.

"I'm almost home." She said cheerily

"I will see you soon. Drive gently." He said and cut off the call.

About five minutes later, as she was about to turn by the intersection leading to her area, a car bumped into hers from behind. She looked around and found other cars slowing down. The traffic robot was on red and no one should move even an inch at that point. The owner of the car that bumped into hers came out. The person was dressed in all black with a black face mask on their face.

Her bumper already fell down with a thud and so she came out trying to figure out what excuse the driver would give. The driver brought out a short gun and pointed it at the already shaken Latoya. Car horns blared loudly as no one was willing to get out of their car to rescue her but were upset all the same.

Latoya's back was against her car, terrified and unable to think. Her mind shutdown at the sight before her.

"Die, you careless mother! It is payback time! Die!"

The masked driver said angrily and then pulled the trigger.
