I woke up the next morning to a knock on the door. After I did not answer, my phone began to ring. I let it go and listened to my ringtone of Darren singing Don't You. After the fourth call, I had to figure out who it was. I turned it over to read the name, it was Joe. I picked it up and took a deep breath.
"What do you want Joe?!"--I yelled
"Hey Lily, umm I'm at your door.. was wondering if we could talk?"--He said
"There is nothing to talk about, your not gonna ruin my life Joe!"--I yelled
"Just please let me in Lily, I just want to talk, please?"
"No Joe go away! I don't want to see you! If Darren finds anything out he won't stay with me and I LOVE him Joe, ok? We were over awhile ago, we will never be together again, your the past I don't want to come back!"--I finished
I hung up before I heard his response, but I heard him opening the door. Darren must have given his friends a spare key, shit. I walked out of the bedroom to see him standing there with his baseball cap, baggy shorts and tshirt with flips. He looked hurt, I assumed it was the last thing I said on the phone.
"I'm not going away Lily, we need to sort this out. I couldn't help it, the tears were running down my cheeks before I even realized it. I didn't want him to see me like this. I went and sat on the couch in our living room. I played with the string on Darren's shorts until he started talking.
"Lily, something is different about you, I mean your happier, and I'm happy that you are happy, but I want to know why you ran away from home right before college, without going back?"
I stayed quiet hoping he would leave, but knowing he wouldn't. He stopped pacing and sat next to me on the couch. I buried my head into my knees and bit my lip to force myself not to lose control and crack. I didn't want him to know what had happened. Then I felt his arms going around me and he pulled me onto his lap.
"Come on Lily, I'm here for you. I will always be here for you."
" I picked my head up and looked at him. He looked the same as when we dated, but I could tell he was sad.
"Joe, things happened, the whole time we were dating, my Dad was abusing me. After that incident where your parents got involved, he changed his target to me instead of my Mom.. I loved you, and was heartbrokem when I knew my last night I wouldn't see you again. I struggled for awhile until I found a secure job put of college and then I met Darren.. He changed my life. I love him, and I love you too, but my love for you is more painful cuz it makes me remember what I went through.."
"Lily! I would have helped you!! And Im not gonna take you back to your Dad or anything! Your a big girl Lily, you need to vent to ya know.. When you wanna see me I will be ready, I'm sorry about the other night even thoufh I know that it shows we are still in love.."
With that he kissed my head and locked the door on his way out.
