Maya POV
After my little break down with Ethan, he decided that I should take the rest of the day off. That I should get away from the house for a little bit clear my head.
I didn't really get Ethan, he's always so cold and emotionless. I get why he is losing your entire family in one night can do a number on you; the fact that he saw it all happen scarred him for life. But there's that little glimpse of old Ethan you get from time to time. I just hate how when old Ethan shows up new Ethan locks him away, afraid that showing any kind of emotion will render him as weak.
Grayson.
I remember the first day we met, I was maybe like seven years old. My dad was really good friends with his dad so they would come over all the time. We'd play man hunt in the big fields behind my house and we'd pretend to conduct "business deals" like our fathers did. Of course we didn't know what kind of business they were doing; it should've been clear to me when i told my father there was monster under my bed and he gave me a switchblade.
We all grew up together, me, the twins, Jose, Tyler, Jeff, Carlos. I was the only girl but we had a shit ton of fun.
Then came our teenage years, once we all hit fifteen we began training and studying drugs, weaponry, hand to hand combat. Anything that would benefit my father. That's also when me and Grayson had started acknowledging each other as more than friends. During our breaks we would sneak out to this abandoned shed in the woods we had found as children. We would talk and kiss a little.
Grayson was actually my first kiss, my first everything as a matter of a fact. That's why it broke my heart when he broke it off with me then announced his engagement to Evelyn the day after. I was heart broken, I cried my eyes out and I couldn't tell anyone because it was forbidden that any one of us date each other. So I confided in Ethan and he helped me.
Then one night Grayson snuck into my bedroom with promises of us being together. Here I am five years later and we're still not together.
As I laid in the hammock I looked at the beautiful sunset, the sky was a beautiful mixture of light blue, orange, yellow, and pink. I could stare at it forever.
I heard a twig snap, but I didn't move. Always stay calm in any moment of suspicion Ethan's voice rang through my head.
From the corner of my eye I saw something move from behind the trees. I slowly and causally sat up fake yawning. I wasn't armed with anything so my best bet was to run back to the house. As I began to walk away I heard faint footsteps.
I picked up my pace walking a little faster only to hear the footsteps accelerate. I began running turning my head to catch a glimpse of the perp. Once I got it I ran faster tripping over the garden hose.
Before I could hit the ground someone caught me. I looked up to find Jeff.
"Woah M, you okay?" He asked worriedly as I stood up straighter.
"Did you not see that guy chasing me?" I asked breathlessly as I regained my balance looking around frantically.
"No"he shook his head.
"What? How could you not have-" I looked around in confusion.
"You're probably just tired, c'mon let's go inside" he held his hand out for me.
"No I know what I saw" I insisted. How could he not have seen me being chased?
"Maya there was no one there" Jeff held my shoulders looking me in the eye.
"But- he was..." I sighed.
"Let's get you inside" he gave me a small smile.
I nodded before he slung his arm around me walking me back to the house. I looked back scanning the yard but he had disappeared.
I swear he was right here.
