The next day, as I’m getting into Vicky’s car, I hear a voice behind me.
“Rosie! Rosie!” It’s Carolyn. Vicky stares at her, eyebrow up in surprise.
Carolyn pants. “R.rose..”
I laugh. Carolyn smiles.
Carolyn takes a deep breath. “.I…I need to talk to you.”
“About what?”
Carolyn looked dubiously at Vicky. “Maybe.... a..alone....would be better.”
“Whose she?” Vicky asks.
“Oh” I say. “Let me introduce you. Carolyn, this is Vicky. Vicky, Carolyn.”
Carolyn extends her hand. Vicky looks at it, and then takes it.
“Is it that important?” I ask Carolyn.
“Oh yeah” she says. “The whole group was talking about it.”
Vicky scrunches her nose. “Whole group?”
“Um, yeah”, I said. “I was going to tell you…”
Carolyn peered at me.
“No, no” I said, laughing. “Not like that.” I wasn’t going to tell Vicky the WHOLE truth.
“Oh” ,Carolyn said, relieved.
“I’m so confused”, Vicky said.
“Don’t be” ,Carolyn said. She looked over at Vicky. “Can I drive Rosie to school? I need to talk to her.”
Just then, Lilly came out of the house. “Oh, hi Carolyn”, she said when she saw her.
Vicky narrowed her eyes. “So even LILLY knows about her, but I don’t?”
“She came to the house yesterday”, I explained quickly. “But it was late, so….”
“Yeah, mhm. Lilly, get in.”
"Actually" ,Carolyn said cheerfully "I'll take Lilly too."
"Oh?", Vicky asked. "So only I can not know?"
"It's not like that" ,I said hurriedly.
Lilly pointed to a dark navy car behind Vicky's. "Is that your car?" she asked Carolyn.
"Yeah. You can go in." Carolyn said.
Lilly quickly went inside the car.
"Practice for you" ,Carolyn said. Oh. Practice for trying to word my way around the truth. To help build my lying-but-not-lying skills.
Vicky stared at me, hard. Then she slid her shades from the top of her head onto her eyes. "We'll talk later." Then she drove off. Sigh.
"Cmon!" ,Carolyn grabbed my arm and bounced to the car. "Practice time! And news!"
I followed her into the car. I bit my lip. I looked back at Lilly, who shared my look. I half-smiled at her and she half-smiled back.
"So anyway", Carolyn said as I buckled my seat belt "On Saturday... the BONFIRE." She winked. I smiled at her.
"The guys were asking", she asked "If you were gonna perform?"
From the back, Lilly asked, "What bonfire? And perform?"
Carolyn panicked at this series of questions, but I just said smoothly "A bonfire me and my friends are going to.But you have to be in a certain group to go. And maybe I'll preform. But I'm not that experienced."
"But your a great singer Rose! You should do that and throw in a few other things."
I smiled at her. "That's a great idea Lilly." Lilly blushed as she said "No problem." Carolyn had relaxed and beamed at me how I could say the truth without saying the whole truth. I turned to her.
"Oh yeah. Do you have a date for that?", I asked.
"Well...." Carolyn blushed. "I might be going with this guy.."
"What's his name?", I asked, excited.
"Um...mhmger" ,Carolyn laughed.
I laughed too. "Cmon, what's his name?"
"Oh, some guy that's really sweet and nerdy." Carolyn said.
"Tellll meeee" ,I laughed again.
"Well... his name is Roger."
"WHAT!?" me and Lilly screamed at the same time.
