Anniversary
Maeryn could once again be found by the fountain, but she wasn't drawing this time. No. She was crying silent tears. As it was night, no one saw her and no one came to bother her. It had been exactly one year since her parents had passed away. They died of illness and nothing could have possibly saved them. Maeryn did have a chance to say goodbye and the little family lived their lives happily for as long as it would last, but none of that took away the pain Maeryn felt whenever she thought about them.
After their funeral, Maeryn fled to Italy, to Volterra. To a quiet village and a quiet life. Quite ironically that the life she was living now was nowhere near the life she had always dreamt about. Maeryn was smart, and economics and math used to be her passion. She had big dreams of becoming an international chartered accountant. Seeing the world and helping people with their businesses with her knowledge and advise. But Maeryn was more than happy, living the life she lived.
When Maeryn fled to Volterra, she had ordered a cup of tea, seeing as she disliked coffee, and a small sweet bun at Agnella's shop. Maeryn stayed there all day, sitting in the sun and watching the many people walk by. That is what her mother and her used to do. Just simply sit somewhere and watch the world go by, along with it's many humans and animals, all rushed, all unaware of what was actually happening around them.
Maeryn had stayed in the cafe until it closed, and Agnella, whom had been watching the girl throughout the day, felt like their was something wrong with her. Agnella closed the shop and sat down on the opposite chair. "Is everything alright, mio caro?" She had asked the girl. Maeryn had gotten out of her daydreaming state and looked at the elderly lady through her goldenbrown locks with her grey-green eyes. She tried to give Agnella her best smile but the elderly woman could see right through her, as she had seen this young girl being sad all day. "Would you like another cup of tea and talk about it?" Agnella had asked as she stood up to get the girl some more tea. "That is very kind of you, but I'm affraid I do not have enough money." Maeryn had admitted while looking down at her hands. Agnella smiled kindly at the girl. "It's on the house." "That is very kind of you, but I can not take it." Maeryn had said as she stood up and grabbed her wallet to pay for her three cups of tea she had consumed through the day. Agnella had kindly pushed down her hands. "It's my pleasure. Please come in and tell me your story. That will be your payment, if you want." she said while gently inviting Maeryn into the warm cafe. Maeryn smiled sadly as she had felt the tears burning behind her eyes as she walked inside the cafe, accepting this elderly lady's offer.
And so, Maeryn told her story to this strange but friendly woman, crying her pain out and eventually failling asleep on the small couch in the corner of the shop. Agnella had layed a blanket over the girl, allowing her to stay and rest for the night. Agnella really felt for the girl and she kept twirling in her mind when her and her husband Adolfo where laying in bed that night. Adolfo had sighed and pulled his wife close to him, asking what was wrong. "This girl, she has nowhere to go, no home and no job." Agnella said as she had rested her head on her husbands chest, hearing his heartbeat. Adolfo had kissed his wives head. "Well, I guess we can always offer her a home here, and she could help us with the cafe." Agnella had smiled and kissed her husband lovely. Ofcourse he had known that that was what his wife was after.
Maeryn had been woken up with a delicious breakfast and some very good news. She ofcourse had accepted their offer imediately and saw the couple as her guardians. The elderly couple on the other hand felt like their wish finally had come true in a way. They had been given someone to look after, like a daughter or granddaughter. And they would make sure Maeryn will have everything she wished for. But Maeryn's wish had been granted. A small family she could once again be a part of.Maeryn sighed once more. "I knew I could find you here." she heard Daemon's voice behind her. Maeryn sniffed and quickly wiped her tears away. Daemon sat down next to her and hugged her close to him, like a big brother would hug his little sister. "It's alright, tesoro. Let it out." Daemon whispered as he gently stroked her hair. Maeryn's quiet sobs slowly became slightly louder and she started to shake.
They stayed like that for a while until Maeryn's tears had all been spilled. That was when she noticed the smell of bleach on him and a small spot of crimson red on his white shirt. Maeryn frowned and looked closely at the spot. "I-is that blood?" she asked, feeling slightly shocked. Daemon quickly closed his jacket and covered the spot. "It's nothing to worry about, tesoro. Honestly. Just some business I had to take care off." Daemon answered truthfully. "D-did you kill anyone?" Maeryn asked, curious but also slightly scared of what his answer might be. "No. I didn't kill anyone, tesoro." He answered and his answered was truthfully. He had never killed anyone. Maeryn sighed but knew he spoke the truth. And even if he hadn't, she knew he would only withhold the truth from her because it would be for her own good. For her own safety, seeing as the life he lived was more than dangerous. "Come on, I am sure Agnella and Adolfo are worried about you, tesoro." Daemon said as he gently pulled her onto her feet and helped her to the cafe.
Once arrived, Daemon gave her one last hug and a kiss on her forehead. "Everything will be alright, tesoro. You will see. Everything will fall into place eventually. Just not in the way you might expect it." Daemon said before letting her go. Maeryn nodded her head and gave him a small yet genuine smile.
Maeryn made her way up to the small apartment and found Agnella and Adolfo gone. They had left a small note saying they would give her some time. Agnella had even baked her favourite chocolate and vanilla cake to hopefully cheer her up. Maeryn smiled sadly at how carring they where for her, but she wasn't feeling hungry. All she truly wanted was to just curl up on her bed and cry until she would fall asleep. Until this day would be over and she could go back to the life she living now. And so she did. She cried until only dry sobs was all she could let out and her eyes grew so heavy that they closed down, and her thoughts took her away to a state of dreams. A place where nothing but her own happy thoughts could reach her.
