Chapter Twenty-Two - The Dragon King

ZIRCON'S POV

It's been a few days, and you've been noticing something going on lately.  Whenever a dragon goes into the king's den, they don't stay for very long, but they always look dejected and worried.  You're trying to figure out what's going on, but without meeting the king in person, you can't confirm anything.

And the problem is, none of the dragons will let you anywhere near the king.  You've never seen him out of his den, either.  Maybe he's ill, or something like that.  What sort of illnesses would dragons even get?  You have no idea.

The dragons seem to have arranged something like shifts to keep watch over the king's den.  There's five of them that you've seen swapping watch, and most other dragons ignore them unless they actually need to see the king.

You know that most of the dragons don't really trust you - there's a sibling pair that don't mind you at all, but most either actively avoid you or yell at you when they see you.  Still, though, if there's something wrong with the king, won't it affect everyone, including yourself?

It's actually starting to worry you.

LILAC'S POV

You half-wish you could go back to Norrle, if for no other reason than to ask around about these mysterious dragon riders.  Though, even if you could, would you really be able to find much?  According to Alynda, they hadn't come to Conniston in around a decade, and they probably hadn't been to a major kingdom like Norrle in much longer.  Plus, you only have one of their names...

All things considered, though, things are going well on this new island.  You do want to find out more about the previous inhabitants of the island, but that can wait until you know more to go off of.

You're happy here.  You're glad that no dragons died in the attack from Zircon's colony, and that everyone has settled in okay.  For now, everything is going well.
