Chapter Twenty-Three - The Old Journal

LILAC'S POV

You're walking around the island, thoroughly exploring it.  On your old island, you knew every inch of it, and you want to do the same with this one.

You once heard a rumor in Norrle that dragon islands are actually alive; living, thinking beings of their own.  That's not true, but it does make you think about how it could have possibly been started.  Generally, people are familiar with the fact that dragons' magic can make islands.  There are wild rumors about how that's possible, though you have yet to hear any that comes close to the truth.  That rumor is one of the stranger ones you've heard.

You shake your head to clear your thoughts, and your vision rests on a small book tucked between two tree branches.  You pull it down, being careful not to rip it, as it's a little stuck.

You turn to the first page and quickly read it.

"Dear Diary,

Amily and Blakely made fun of me for having a diary.  I'm used to their taunts by now, but I wish they'd stop.  At least the dragons don't judge me for it - well, they don't know what a diary is for.

I don't think Visnel is too fond of me.  He keeps having conversations that stop when I come into earshot...  I thought cryo-dragons were supposed to be friendly.  I'm getting a bit concerned.

You frown.  Amily?  That's the name of the dragon rider that everyone in Conniston Village talked about.  Liss and Blakely must be the other two...but that still doesn't answer why no one in Conniston could name them.

You also wonder who Visnel is.  Maybe one of their usual dragons?  You flip to another page.

"Dear Diary,

Amily and Visnel are actively avoiding me now.  Blakely spends most of his time away from the island, but he does that all the time anyway.  I think Amily has even gotten into some of the other dragons' heads; they're getting skittish whenever I come near.

I don't understand what I did to make them avoid me.  I'm just my usual self!  I don't like Amily; she's always been a jerk, but this is horrible even for her.

At least I can still count on Irlydi to be here with me.

Sounds like Liss was having some trouble.  Visnel must be Amily's usual dragon, and Irlydi is probably Liss's.

Maybe Liss had some more entries before the other colony disappeared.  You'll have to read farther and see what was happening.  Maybe this'll even help you find out why no one in Conniston could name Liss or Blakely.
